Men's swimming finishes second; women fourth at Grinnell Inviational

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams earned big success at the Grinnell Invitation on Friday and Saturday. The men finished second out of nine teams with a score of 678.5 points, while the women placed fourth out of 11 teams with a final score of 434.

On the men's side, Luke Rettig, Emanuel Anguelov, Jack McCormick, and Teddy McGuire finished third in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:35.35. Later in the 800-yard free relay, Tyler Leslie, Matthew Meyer, Rettig, and Anguelov touched first with a time of 7:01.70 to set a new meet record by two seconds. Caesar Castillo, Jacob Alejandro, McCormack, and Henry Chapon clocked in a time of 1:34.62 in the 200-yard medley relay to finish second. Leslie, Rettig, Anguelov, and Addison closed out the event with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3;05.93.

In individual events, Leslie finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.83, while  Meyer followed in third with a time of 1:58.64. In the 100-yard freestyle, Anguelov clocked in a time of 47.17 to place fifth. Castillo finished with a time of 53:31 in the 100-yard individual medley to sit in fourth. Meyer later finished second in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:17.03. In the 200-yard freestyle, Augie claimed the top three spots with finishes by Leslie, Mark Addison, and Anguelov. Addison clocked in a time of 58.90 in the 100-yard breaststroke to place fifth before Leslie earned his third victory after a 1:53.85 finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Anguelov followed in third with a time of 1:56.44, and Castillo clocked in fourth at 2:00.22. In the 50-yard freestyle, Rettig touched fourth with a time of 21.37. 

For the women, Kylee Blaha, Savannah Shapley, Victoria Krol, and Sophia Warren clocked in a time of 8:32.45 to claim fifth in the 800-yard free relay. Kendle Mihm, Giselle Koonce, Charlotte Vogen, and Mya Pheneger closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.92. 

In individual events, Kendle Mihm touched fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54:05. In the 100-yard individual medley, Caitlin Stoddard finished fourth with a time of 1:03.66. Shapley conquered the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:28.23 to finish four seconds ahead of second place. Giselle Koonce clocked ina time of 1:59.00 in the 200-yard freestyle to finish second, and Livy Sholl touched fourth with a time of 1:09.61 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Koonce finished second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:18.00, while Shapley followed in third at 18:22.92.

The Vikings will be back in action on Jan. 24 for the Thunder Invitational hosted by Wheaton.
