Women's Basketball drops road contest at North Park

Chicago, IL –The Augustana Vikings women's basketball lost a nailbiter to CCIW foe North Park, 61-60.

The Vikings grabbed control early, jumping out to a 14-9 lead after the first quarter behind strong interior scoring from Cali Papez. Augustana extended the advantage to as many as 11 points in the second quarter, with Papez and bench contributions fueling the run. The Vikings took a 28-27 edge into halftime, staving off the North Park surge to close out the quarter.

After the break, both teams traded baskets early before Augustana pulled away again. The Vikings built their largest lead of the night of eight points in the third quarter, punishing the North Park defense. 

North Park responded in the fourth, using a barrage of free throws and fast-break points to erase the deficit. The game saw four ties and three lead changes. After North Park tied it at 55-55, Augie regained the advantage on a Papez layup to make it 57-55 with just over a minute to play. The Vikings held a two-point lead late, but North Park answered with clutch free throws to even the score at 57-57. North Park came up clutch in the final seconds, closing out the game with a 61-60 victory.

Cali Papez led the Vikings with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Vikings bench added 15 points, and Augustana outrebounded North Park 50-34 while scoring 12 second-chance points. The Vikings shot 86.7% from the free-throw line and held North Park to 32.7% shooting overall.

The Vikings fall to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW. They are back in action on Saturday, January 17 against Carroll, in game one of a doubleheader at the Carver Center. That game is slated for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
