Women's wrestling finishes fifth at NWCA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's wrestling team finished fifth at the two-day NWCA National Duals on Saturday after winning four consecutive consolation brackets.

The Vikings faced the No. 4 seed Elmira Eagles in the opening round of the event, where Augie only lost by one point with a score of 24-23. Mia Vazquez secured the first weight class of 103 with a 10-0 technical fall to earn the early 4-0 lead. The Eagles took the upper hand after a win in the 110 division before Hannah Suboni-Kaufman grabbed a 6-1 decision at 117 to make a 7-5 score. The teams went back-and-forth in the next categories, with Moni Griffin grabbing the 131 class after an 11-1 technical fall to trail by one at a 12-11 score. Elmira secured the next three weight classes before Maryam Ndiaye and Angie Guy pinned their opponents in their respective weight categories, earning five team points.

In round two, Augie defeated the Bethany Bison by a score of 24-18. In the opening matchup, Vazquez earned a 13-0 technical fall, and Bethany followed with wins in the next three weight classes. Griffin earned her second win of the day with a 10-0 technical fall to close the gap with a 12-9 score. The Bisons earned the 139 categories before Aine Moffit pinned her opponent at 145  to draw the score even at 15-15. Kelly Ladd followed with a 7-4 decision at 160 to overtake the lead 18-16. Bethany secured the 180 class before Guy closed out the dual with a pin to seal the victory with five team points.

The last match of the first day was against the Manchester Spartans, where the Vikings earned a tiebreaker victory to make the top-8. Vazquez earned her third straight technical fall to put Augie ahead once again. Manchester grabbed the following division before Suboni-Kaufman pinned her opponent. Griffin collected her third win with a 14-1 technical fall to lead 18-9. The Spartans followed with two straight wins before Ndiaye and Ladd pinned their foe in their respective divisions. Manchester secured the final category, but Augie had more match points, earning the victory. 

In the first round of day two, the Vikings earned a 23-22 victory against the Pacific Boxers. Vazquez pinned her opponent before Suboni-Kaufman earned a 5-0 decision. The Boxers grabbed the next three divisions before Moffit pinned her foe to make a 22-18 score. Pacific claimed 160 before Ndiaye pinned 180, and Guy closed the dual with a forfeit to seal the one-point victory. 

The final dual was the fifth-place matchup against the Elmira Eagles once again, this time resulting in a 26-19 victory. Both teams went back-and-forth with wins before Augie collected wins in the final three categories. Vazquez pinned her second straight opponent, and Suboni-Kaufman followed with an 11-0 technical fall. Griffin grabbed five team points off a pin before the Eagles grabbed two consecutive wins to make a 16-16 score. Moffit kicked off a hot streak with a 7-2 decision, while Ndiaye earned a 12-1 technical fall, and Guy closed the event with a 9-1 decision. 

With the 4-1 record, the Vikings improve to 8-4 on the season and will be back in action on Jan. 17 for the Mike Duroe Invite at Cornell.
