DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team fell to the No. 23 Dubuque Spartans on Tuesday in three sets.
In the first set, both teams rallied before Augie found the lead after a five-point run with an attack error by Dubuque, stretching the gap to four. The Spartans drew the score even at 10 apiece, and the teams tied once more, and a kill by
Grace Gustafson moved the Vikings ahead once more with a score of 13-11. A successful attempt by
Lucy Pufundt moved the difference to five. A late 10-2 run by the home team put them on top by a score of 23-20. A service ace by Pufundt moved the game to one, but Dubuque took the first set 25-22.
The Spartans took the early lead in the second set until an attack error by the home team moved the game to 7-7. The teams drew even four additional times before Dubuque regained the lead with a score of 18-14. A kill by
Carmela Carbone created a late four-point run for the Vikings to get within one at 24-23, but the Spartans secured the final point to take the second set.
In the third set, the home team ran with the lead after seven straight points and held the advantage the entire set to take the matchup in three sets.
Mallory Coley led the team with eight kills, while
Leah Rizzo notched 17 assists and
Alexis Richards had 12 digs and three assisted blocks.
With the loss, Augie moves to 9-8 on the season and will be back in action on Friday for their first home conference battle of the season.
