MILWAUKEE, Wis -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team defeated both the Ripon Red Hawks and Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors in straight sets.
In set one against Ripon, the Vikings secured the advantage after a 13-3 run. Both teams rallied, with the Red Hawks getting as close as three, but Augie maintained the advantage. The Vikings secured the final three points with kills by
Grace Gustafson and
Alita Folkening, and blocks by
Mallory Coley and Folkening, stopping an attempt to take the set 25-19.
Augustana took the lead early in the second set after five consecutive points with Coley moving the game to 8-2. A successful attempt moved the score to 11-3 after a kill by Gustafson from
Abby Kirchner. The Vikings ran away with the set after a 13-1 run to make a 23-8 score.
Elle Jones and Kelsey Matthews blocked an attack, and
Grace Lichthardt closed the set with a service ace with a 25-11 score.
In the third set, both teams drew even seven times in the set before Augie grabbed the lead after an attack error by Ripon moved the game to 21-18. Folkening closed the first match with a kill from
Alyssa Millan to sweep the Red Hawks.
Richards led the team with eight kills, while Rizzo collected 14 assists and Turley had 12 digs.
In the first set against Wisconsin Lutheran, both teams rallied, with a bad set by the Warriors moving the gap to 11-8. The home team fought back to take the advantage, but a kill by Gustafson drew the score even at 13 apiece. Both teams tied six additional times until a service ace by
Katelyn Turley pulled the Vikings ahead 24-23. A block by
Lucy Pufundt and
Carmela Carbone closed out the set with a score of 27-25.
Both teams rallied in the second set, with a killy by Pufundt stretching the gap to 13-9. A late rally by the Vikings moved the difference to nine after a block error by the home team made a 22-11.
Carli Udovich collected a kill from Kirchner to take the second set and lead 2-0 overall.
The Vikings secured the advantage after a 6-3 run with a solo block by Folkening, closing the run. The teams tied twice, and the Warriors snatched the advantage. A late rally moved Augie ahead once more with a solo block by Carbone, creating a one-point lead at 19-18. The Vikings notched five more with another solo block by Carbone, making a 24-19 game, and a service error securing the game in three sets.
Folkening led the team with eight kills, while Rizzo notched 14 assists, and Richards and Kirchner had 11 digs.
With the two wins, Augie moves to 6-6 on the season and will be back on Tuesday, Sept. 23, for a conference battle against Wheaton.
