Men's water polo defeats McKendree in fourth period thriller

Box Score ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team defeated the McKendree Bearcats on Saturday by a score of 14-12. 

Stevan Rasic found the back of the cage early in the first period off a pass by Oskar Bannister, but McKendree followed with a goal of their own. The Bearcats tallied one more, and Rasic notched another off a pass by Ian Palmroos. At 1:41, Rasic secured his third goal with Tyler Leslie notching the assist to create a 3-2 score after the first eight minutes.

In the second, Palmroos put it in the back of the net on a penalty shot, and Rhys Lomax put it in the cage on a power play to make a 5-2 game. McKendree tallied another before James Davis dented the twine. At 1:22, Leslie passed to Rasic for another Augie goal to create a 7-3 score.

Both teams rallied shots in the third, with Augie's goal coming from Palmroos to create an 8-4 score. The visitors collected two before Lomax found the back of the net, but the Bearcats tallied two more to make a 9-8 game. With 37 seconds remaining, Rasic collected another goal, and Mark Addison got credit for the assist. McKendree closed the period with a successful shot to move the game to 10-9 heading to the final eight minutes of play.

Mason Landes secured his first goal off a pas by Trentinn Lechleitner, but the Bearcats evened the score at 11 apiece with four minutes remaining. Both teams went back and forth with goals, with Addison notching the goal, and Ben Symington collected the assist. Augie found the final two goals, coming from Bannister and Cole Faux, to secure the 14-12 victory. 

Eight different Vikings scored in the win, with Rasic leading with five. Declan Hutton saved 19 shots in his 32 minutes in goal.

With the win, Augie moves to 1-3 on the season and will be back in action on Oct. 3 for the Gary Troyer Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif.
