GENEVA, Ohio -- Heather Michalski and
Laina Nelson both achieved All-American status in the javelin event on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Michalski finished in fifth place for First Team honors, while Nelson grabbed ninth overall for Second Team.
Michalski had her best throw come in her first attempt, securing a distance of 41.30m to push her into the finals. Nelson also saw her best throw come early, posting a mark of 39.91m in her second attempt to place her eighth after the first three rounds. Nelson moved down to ninth in the final three rounds after three scratches, while Michalski moved down one spot to finish in fifth.Â
The two are the first All-Americans in the javelin for the women's track & field program since Amy Calderone in 2000, and just the second and third ever to achieve All-American status in the event in program history.
