ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustan Vikings men's tennis team picked up a conference victory over the Wheaton Thunder on Tuesday by a score of 6-1.
Augustana claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches to begin the afternoon. The Thunder snatched the victory at the No. 1 slot, but
Santiago Diaz and
Aingeru Garcia earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Timothee Philip and
Saman Rezaeyan proved to be the difference with a 6-4 decision at No. 3 to give Augie a 1-0 lead entering singles.
Five of the six singles matches went in favor of the Vikings. The Thunder evened the score with the first win, but Augustana answered with the final five, beginning with
Arthur Hermange's 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 1 and
Nicolas Navarro's 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6. The other three wins for the Vikings came in three sets, with Rezaeyan and Diaz winning the first and third sets in their respective matches. Philip bounced back from a close first-set loss to win the final two.
With the victory, Augie improves to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action next Tuesday at home vs. Elmhurst.Â
