Two Vikings punch tickets to the national tournament

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team finished fifth out of 16 teams at the NCAA Lower Midwest Regional on Saturday. Michael Macias and Josh Woodrey finished in the top three of their respective weight class to qualify for the national tournament. 

Macias started with a pin against UW-Oshkosh in the 157 weight class before a sudden victory in the quarterfinals against UW-La Crosse. In the semifinals, the sophomore secured a 14-5 major decision before forfeiting the first-place matchup. Woodrey pinned his opponent from UW-Oshkosh in the first round of the 285 division and followed with a 2-1 decision over Carthage. In the semifinals, the senior converted a 4-2 decision before dropping to No. 1 nationally ranked wrestler from UW-La Crosse. 

Clay DeBaillie finished fourth in the 184 category after a 16-0 technical fall in round one before falling to No. 7 nationally ranked and No. 2 regionally ranked foe from UW-Lacrosse. In the consolation bracket, the senior grabbed back-to-back pins against UW-Oshkosh and Pacific. DeBailie advanced to the third-place matchup after a medical forfeit and fell to the No. 7 regionally ranked individual from MSOE. 

Jacob Badger placed fourth in the 197 weight class after a pin in round one versus Aurora before a 16-8 major decision over UW-Stevens Point. In the semifinals, the senior dropped to the No. 3 nationally ranked and No. 2 regionally ranked foe from UW-La Crosse to move to the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Badger won by fall against Concordia-Moorhead before falling to the No. 6 regionally ranked opponent from UW-Eau Claire. 

Mikey Rodriguez finished eighth in the 149 division after a 12-7 decision against Carthage in round one and fell to the No. 2 nationally ranked and No. 1 regionally ranked wrestler from UW-Eau Claire. In the consolation bracket, the senior won by a 9-1 major decision but dropped his final two matchups. 

Jack Miller placed eighth in the 174 category after an 11-2 major decision over Carthage and dropped round two against the No. 6 nationally ranked and No. 2 regionally ranked foe from Augsburg. In the consolation bracket, the sophomore pinned his opponent from St. John's but fell in his final two matchups. 

Macias and Woodrey will be back in action on March 14-15 for the NCAA Championships in Providence, R.I. at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.
