Box Score 2 ASHWAUBENON, Wis -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team was defeated in its final two games of the St. Norbert Invite on Saturday, falling to the Hamline Pipers by a score of 5-2 and the UW-Superior Yellowjackets, 4-3.
Against Hamline, the Vikings claimed the early lead with two wins in doubles play.
Maddy Harned and
Hattie Timerman were victorious at the No. 3 position by a final of 6-3, while
Hannah Colbert and
Colleen Larry won a close 7-5 decision at No. 1. Augie led 1-0 heading into singles.
The Pipers won five of the six singles matches to claim the team win, with three of those victories coming in three sets. Augie's lone win came at the No. 1 slot as Colbert knocked off her opponent in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 7-6. The No. 3, 4, and 6 matches all were decided in third-set tiebreakers and went in favor of Hamline.
In the second contest of the day vs. UW-Superior, Augie faced an earlier deficit after dropped two of three doubles matches. Colbert and Larry picked up a victory at No. 1 with a score of 6-1, but the Yellowjackets secured the other two and took a 1-0 lead into singles.
It was a back and forth battle in singles, with each team winning three matches. Colbert continued her momentum with a victory at No. 1, defeating her counterpart by a final of 6-2, 6-1.
Kassidy Anderson battled through a tough first set and then cruised to a win in the second at No. 6, winning 7-6, 6-0. Larry was the other winner for the Vikings at No. 2, taking down her opponent in three sets after dropping the first. The Yellowjackets took the other three matches, which included two in three sets, to win by a final of 4-3.
With the losses, Augie drops to 4-7 on the season. The team will have some time off before taking on Illinois Tech on March 15.
