Three Vikings qualify for nationals at NCWWC Regionals

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's wrestling team finished fourth out of 10 teams at the NCWWC Regionals on Saturday. Sandie Pfeil, Moni Griffin, and Sawyer Graham finished in the top three of their respective weight classes to qualify for the national tournament.

In the 124 weight class, Pfeil received a bye in her first appearance before pinning her opponent from Sioux Falls to advance to the semifinals. The senior fell to No. 4 nationally ranked and No. 1 regionally ranked opponent from Iowa. In the consolation semifinals, Pfeil collected a 7-2 decision and followed with an 11-4 decision in the third place match. 

Griffin received a bye in the first round of the 131 weight division before a 16-6 technical fall over Sioux Falls. The sophomore fell to No. 4 nationally ranked and No. 1 regionally ranked opponent from Wartburg to move to the consolation bracket. In the semifinals, Griffin grabbed a 12-1 technical fall over Wartburg and followed with a pin against Simpson in the third place match. 

In the 180 weight category, Graham received a bye before a 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the senior fell to No. 1 nationally and regionally ranked wrestler from Iowa. In the consolation bracket, Graham won by a 4-1 decision and followed with a 5-0 decision in the third place match.

Aine Moffit finished fifth in the 145 weight class after a bye in round one before falling to No. 2 nationally and regionally ranked opponent from Iowa. In the consolation bracket, the junior won by a 10-0 technical fall before a 8-2 decision over Simpson to move to the semifinal round. Moffit fell to No. 4 regionally ranked wrestler from Wartburg to move to the fifth place match where she obtained a 14-10 technical fall. In her final round, the junior placed fifth after losing to No. 9 nationally ranked and No. 3 regionally ranked opponent from Simpson. 

Maryam Ndiaye placed fifth in the 160 weight division after moving to the consolation bracket after falling to No. 9 nationally ranked and No. 2 regionally ranked wrestler from Dubuque. In round one of the consolation bracket, the freshman pinned her opponent from Cornell and followed with a 11-0 technical fall over Wartburg and a 15-11 decision against Augsburg. In the semifinal round, Ndiaye lost to the same opponent from Dubuque to move to the fifth place match where she won by a medical forfeit. In the freshman's final round, Ndiaye fell to No. 5 regionally ranked individual from Simpson. 

Liz Ramirez finished sixth in the 117 weight class after a bye in the first round before falling to No. 3 regionally ranked opponent from Wartburg. In the consolation bracket, the freshman won by a 10-0 technical fall over teammate Gwen Burbridge and followed with a 13-12 decision over Augsburg. Ramirez dropped her final two matchups to place sixth. 

Pfeil, Griffin, and Graham will be back in action on March 7-8 for the NCWWC National Championships in Coralville, Iowa.
