Woodrey, Badger earn All-Conference honors at CCIW Championships

DECATUR, Ill.  -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team finished fifth at the CCIW Championships on Saturday with 72 team points. Seven wrestlers finished in the top six of their respective weight classes, while Josh Woodrey and Jacob Badger collected All-CCIW honors with their performances.

Woodrey was the top individual placer for Augie with a second-place finish in the 285 weight division. Woodrey started his day with a 13-3 major decision over Wheaton and followed with a 2-1 decision in the semifinals against Millikin. In the first-place match, the senior fell to the No. 10 nationally ranked opponent from North Central. 

Jacob Badger placed third in the 197 category after a bye in round one. In the quarterfinals, the senior secured a 20-4 technical fall against Concordia (Wis.) and fell to the No. 2 regionally ranked foe from Wheaton. In the consolation semifinals, Badger won by fall over MSOE and claimed third place after a 19-2 technical fall against Millikin. 

Mikey Rodriguez and Jack Patting placed fourth in each of their respective weight classes. Rodriguez received a bye in the first round of the 149 division and moved to the consolation bracket after a major decision against MSOE. In the second round of the consolation bracket, the senior received a bye before a pin versus Concordia (Wis.). In the semifinals, Rodriguez won by a 10-6 decision to move to the third-place match where the senior fell to MSOE to place fourth. Patting finished fourth in the 165 category after a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, the senior defeated Carthage by a 4-1 decision and was pinned by the No. 12 national ranked opponent from North Central. In the consolation semifinals, he secured a 4-2 decision against Elmhurst and dropped to Aurora in the third-place match. 

Jack Reina placed sixth in the 125 weight class after moving to the consolation bracket with a loss against the No. 6 regionally ranked wrestler from Millikin. In the first round of the consolation bracket, the junior pinned his foe from Illinois Wesleyan before dropping his final two matchups. Samuel Deyro finished sixth in the 133 division after a bye and followed with a loss against the No. 3 regionally ranked wrestler from Millikin. In the second round of the consolation bracket, the senior received a bye and fell in his final two rounds. Michael Macias placed sixth in the 157 weight class after a bye and followed with a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the sophomore fell to the No. 6 regionally ranked opponent from Carthage to move to the consolation bracket. In his final two matchups, Macias lost to Millikin and the No. 7 regionally ranked wrestler from Aurora. 

Vinny Querciagrossa was awarded the CCIW's RESPECT Award. 

The Vikings will be back in action for the two-day NCAA Lower Midwest Regional on February 28 and March 1.
