DECATUR, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team began their weekend with every wrestler placing in the top three of their respective weight class at the Future CCIW Championships on Friday.
Jaylen Clayton started with a second-place finish in the 141 weight class after a pin against his opponent from Carthage in the first round. In round two, the freshman collected a 19-3 technical fall before dropping to teammate Will Taylor in round three. Taylor placed first in the 141 division after a pin against Carthage before a 21-2 technical fall over Carthage. The sophomore secured first after the 9-6 decision over Clayton.
Kameron Hanel finished third in the 149 category with his first matchup being in the quarterfinals where he fell to Millikin. In the consolation bracket, Hanel grabbed back-to-back pins over Carthage and Millikin to advance to the third-place match. The senior clinched third after a pin over Millikin.
Noah DeMarco finished second and Kadin Rednour placed third in the 157 weight class. DeMarco received a bye in his first round before a 19-3 technical fall over Carthage. In the semifinals, the freshman pinned his foe from Elmhurst before falling to Elmhurst in the first-place match. Rednour also started his day with a bye before moving to the consolation bracket after a loss in the quarterfinals. In round two of the consolation matchups, the junior received a bye before pinning his opponent from Aurora. In the semifinals, Rednour advanced after a forfeit and secured third after a fall against Carthage.
Nathan Petreikis took second in the 184 division after falling to Millikin in round one. In his final two matchups, the junior won by medical forfeit and a pin against MSOE. In the 197 weight class, Conor Phelan finished third after a pin against Carthage in round one and followed with a loss in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, the freshman received a bye before a 13-2 major decision over Carthage. In the semifinals, Phelan pinned his foe from Millikin to advance to the third-place match where he notched a pin over Millikin. Teke Nieto finished first in the 285 division with two pins against Concordia (Wis.) and Millikin.
The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow for the CCIW Championships at 1 p.m.
