Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo upset the MIT Engineers on Sunday in the third-place game of the DIII National Championships.
In the opening period, the teams traded shots before
Cole Faux found the back of the net off a pass by
Oskar Bannister to take the early lead. The Vikings saw three more attempts before the Engineers drew the score even with 3:14 remaining in the period. Faux scored another goal 45 seconds later to pull Augie ahead once more at 2-1.
Stevan Rasic found the back of the cage at 1:33 to make a two-point difference, but MIT followed with a goal to make a 3-2 score. The Engineers tied the game at three apiece after eight minutes of action.
Both teams fired shots in the second period, with the teams remained scoreless. After 5:30 minutes of action, MIT tallied back-to-back shots to snatch the lead at 5-3.
Rhys Lomax scored his first goal with a man advantage to get the Vikings within one. Both teams followed with goals, with Rasic finding the back of the net for Augie. The Engineers obtained two more points to move the gap to three with a minute left in the half.
Ian Palmroos dented the twin with an extra attacker to conclude the period with a score of 8-6 entering halftime.
Returning to action, MIT scored in a power-play situation before Palmroos put up a score for the Vikings on the five-meter attempt. The Engineers found two more successful attempts, while leaving Augie scoreless until 54 seconds remaining when Palmroos put it in the back of the cage in a powerplay advantage. MIT attempted two more shots in the period, but both were denied by Rasic and Hutton, respectively.
In the fourth, Bannister found the back of the goal off a pass by
Mark Addison in a man-up advantage to make an 11-9 score. The Engineers moved ahead by three once more before Addison scored a goal of his own with 4:26 remaining in the game. Two minutes later, Bannister added to the scoresheet to move the team within one at 12-11. At 1:02 on the game clock, MIT found the back of the net, and Augustana immediately took a full timeout. Following the break,
Declan Hutton fired a shot to the back of the cage with 54 seconds remaining to inch the score to 13-12. On the Engineers' next possession, Hutton was granted the steal before Augie called a 30-second timeout with 28 seconds left. With less than 10 seconds on the board, Faux put a shot in the net to even the score at 13-13 and force MIT to huddle up for a timeout. Returning to play, the Engineers were unsuccessful on the attempt, with Hutton seeing a buzzer-beater shot to the back of the net for a full-length goal to seal the 14-13 upset.
Seven different Vikings scored in the win, with Faux and Palmroos leading with three apiece. Addison stole three possessions, while Hutton had 14 saves and two steals in his 32 minutes in goal.
With the win, Augie finishes the season with a third-place finish in the DIII National Championships and an overall record of 18-9.
