Women's basketball defeated by UW-Platteville

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team fell to the UW-Platteville Pioneers by a score of 56-49.

In the opening quarter, the Vikings outscored the Pioneer 16-11. Cali Papez was first to score in the battle, and the visitors were quick to follow. A three-point shot by Audrey Erickson put the Vikings ahead once more with a 5-2 score. The teams traded points and saw three ties before seven consecutive points gave Augie the 16-9 advantage with 1:07 remaining. In that run, the Vikings held UW-Platteville scoreless for four minutes. The Pioneers grabbed two points, but Augie led 16-11 after 10 minutes of action.

A three-point shot by Erickson moved the difference back to seven before eight straight points pushed the visitors ahead. UW-Platteville's run continued with three shots at the charity line before a shot by Tia Lewis behind the arc moved the Vikings within one at 24-23. Erickson knocked down another three-pointer to draw the score even at 26. The teams drew even once more before the Pioneers grabbed the final five points to lead 34-29 entering the halftime break.

Returning to the court, UW-Platteville grabbed six points to take the 11-point advantage. A layup by Lewis after a three-point shot by Carly Stone got Augie as close as six with 6:04 remaining in the quarter. The Vikings saw this differential once more after a free-throw point by Lewis, but the Pioneers secured the final four points to lead by 10 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

In the fourth quarter, Augustana tallied the seven points with a layup by Lewis, squashing the gap to three. The Pioneers notched one at the charity stripe before a successful layup by Jazmeriah Jones pulled them within two at 48-46. The Vikings were unable to take over the visitors to close the game 56-49.

Two Vikings secured double-digit scoring, with Erickson leading with 16 points and seven rebounds. Lewis followed with 13 points, while Kadence Tatum had four assists. 

With the loss, Augie moves to 3-3 on the season and will be back in action on Dec. 13 to battle Millikin.
