DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings defeated the Dubuque Spartans in the final game of the Paxton's Pack Classic on Tuesday by a score of 83-64.
Augie was quick to get on the board in the opening quarter with shots from
Jazmeriah Jones and
Carly Stone to make a 5-0 score. The Spartans overtook the lead after six consecutive points at 7:16 before Jones knocked down a three-pointer to regain the upper hand at 8-6. The teams traded points, each taking the advantage before Augie grabbed two from the free-throw line to secure the three-point gap. The Vikings saw this difference twice more before Dubuque drew the score even at 16 apiece with 1:22 on the clock. The Spartans took the lead after a pair of shots at the charity line before
Audrey Erickson tied the score with 19 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Lexi Hayes stole the home team's possession with 13 seconds on the clock and was fouled immediately to put her at the free-throw line, where she made one to put Augie up 19-18.
In the second quarter, Augie moved the difference to seven after six straight points with
Paige Melton moving the score to 25-18. The team held the upper hand and found this gap once more after a layup in the paint by Jones at 3:47. The Spartans got within one point twice in the final minute of play, but the Vikings led 39-38 entering halftime.
Returning to the court, the teams were scoreless until 8:26 when shots by Jones and Melton pushed the difference to five. A 7:12, Jones put up five straight points to create an eight-point difference at 48-40. The Vikings found this gap once more before Papez moved the gap to double-digits, and
Tia Lewis created a 12-point difference with a score of 54-42. Augie continued the scoring momentum and created the largest gap so far of 18 after a layup by Papez. The Vikings found this gap twice more with shots by Lewis and Papez. The Spartans closed the quarter with a layup, but Augie led 70-54 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter, both teams remained scoreless until four consecutive points by the Vikings to create a gap of 20. At 5:13, Erickson started a scoring run along with Melton to create the largest gap of 25 with a score of 80-55. The teams traded shots in the final three minutes of play, but Augie held the double-digit upper hand to secure the 83-64 win.
Five different individuals scored double-digits, with Jones leading with 17. Papez and Lewis followed with 16 points, while Melton had 15 and Erickson had 13. Lewis also grabbed seven shots of the glass, and Erickson tallied six assists.Â
With the win, Augie moves to 6-5 on the season and will be back in action in conference action with a clash against Millikin in the Carver Center on Jan. 3.
