CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team fell to the Coe Kohawks on Tuesday by a score of 62-39.
In the low-scoring opening quarter, the Vikings outscored the Kohawks 9-4. The teams traded shots early, tying the game at two apiece after just two minutes of play. Both teams remained scoreless until 4:13 when Coe pulled ahead, but Augie followed with a two of their own to draw the score even once more. The teams remained at 4-4 until
Kadence Tatum closed with five consecutive points in the final minutes to pull the Vikings ahead by five with a score of 9-4.Â
In the second, the Kohawks went on a 6-2 run in the first three minutes to put the deadlock at 11-11. A jump shot by
Paige Melton moved the advantage back in Augie's favor before the home team scored to create a score of 13-13. The Vikings regained the lead once more after successful shots by
Audrey Erickson and
Ciara Hull. At 2:58, the Kohawks moved within one before
Carly Stone knocked down a three-point shot to create a four-point gap. The home team tied the scoring again at 20-20 with 1:12 remaining in the half before collecting the final four points of the half to take their first lead with a score of 24-20.Â
Returning to the court, Coe pulled as far as six before a jump shot in the paint by
Tia Lewis and a three-pointer by
Cali Papez put Augie within one at 26-25. The Kohawks went on an 11-point run to secure the 12-point differential with under a minute on the clock. Both teams traded shots in the final 30 seconds, with Erickson adding two on a fast break layup in the final two seconds to make a 38-28 score entering the final quarter.Â
In the fourth quarter, the Kohawks added four to their score after successful shots from the free throw line. Coe's offense broke away, outshooting Augie 24-11 and ran away with the 62-39 victory.Â
Eight different Vikings scored in the game, with Erickson leading with 11 points along with four assists. Lewis followed with nine points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Melton had six rebounds.Â
With the loss, Augie moves to 4-4 on the season and will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 16, to battle No. 19 Wash-U
