Men's water polo splits on final day of MPSF Weekend II

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass. -- The Augustana Vikings finished Day Two at MPSF Weekend II, taking down Washington & Jefferson 16-9, but falling to #2 Johns Hopkins 11-10 to finish the weekend.

In their first Sunday matchup at MPSF Weekend II, the Augustana Vikings secured a 16-9 victory over the Washington & Jefferson Presidents.

The first quarter set the tone for the game, with Augustana's Rhys Lomax opening the scoring unassisted. Following a Washington & Jefferson response on a penalty, Ian Palmroos would answer with his own. Mark Addison would follow less than a minute later; however, the Presidents would respond before the end of the quarter, with the Vikings leading 3-2.

Washington & Jefferson fought back in the second quarter, taking the lead 5-4 with Lomax getting the goal for Augie. Augustana would find two late in the period from Addison and Mason Landed to make it 6-5 Vikings at halftime.

Augustana would gain a two-goal cushion when Palmroos buried a power-play goal off an Alden Brinkmeier assist. The Presidents would close it to one before the Vikings exploded for three goals to end the third period by way of Oskar Bannister and Lomax twice, ending the period with Augustana up 10-6.

The Vikings would hold onto their lead through the fourth, outscoring Washington & Jefferson 6-3. Addison opened it up with two before Bannister and Lomax poured it on with goals of their own. Bannister would get another off a James Davis assist, and with just over a minute to play, Davis would bury his own off a Lomax assist.

In their second matchup of the day, the Augustana Vikings would fall to #2 Johns Hopkins by a score of 11-10.

The Blue Jays would open the scoring in just 14 seconds; however, the Vikings would respond with three goals as Davis completed a power play, Palmroos and Stevan Rasic buried goals of their own to end the first up 3-1.

In the second, Johns Hopkins would capitalize on an early penalty shot, and Lomax would respond for the Vikings, making it 4-2. The Blue Jays would go on to outscore the Vikings 3-1 for the rest of the period to tie the match with Addison getting the lone Augie goal in the frame.

In the third, Rasic would regain the lead for the Vikings before the Blue Jays answered with two of their own to swing the advantage. The Vikings would capitalize on a penalty shot, at Bence Kovacs-Siklosi found the twine, tying it at 7-7.

The Blue Jays would open the fourth period with three goals, with one by way of power play, to take a 10-7 advantage. Bannister and Addison would answer with goals of their own before the Blue Jays netted another. With under a minute to play, the Vikings would make it a one-score match when Davis buried one off a Lomax assist; however, the late push was not enough, and the Vikings fell 11-10.

The Vikings finish regular season play 14-7 and look forward to the MPSF Championships Nov. 21-23 in Stanford, Calif.
