Women's volleyball sweeps on Senior Day

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings volleyball team swept a two-match Senior Day with a clean 3-1 victory over Loras, finishing the Duhawks by scores of 25-10, 23-25, 25-23, and 25-15.

In the first, Augustana jumped out to a 4–1 lead behind an attack error from Loras, a kill from Mallory Coley, and a smooth swing from Grace Gustafson. After a brief Loras sideout, the Vikings responded with the first major surge of the match — a 4–1 run fueled by kills from Coley and Carmela Carbone, along with multiple Duhawk miscues, pushing the score to 8–3. A kill from Carli Udovicha and a Loras error extend the lead to 10-4. After a sideout, the Vikings strung together a 5–1 stretch capped by kills from Gustafson and Alita Folkening and a service ace from Alexis Richards to make it 15–6. The Vikings followed with a 6-2 run that included kills from Folkening, Coley, Gustafson twice, Udovich, and Carbone. That surge extended the lead to 21–9, and Augustana didn't let up. The Vikings closed the frame with a 4–1 finishing run, highlighted by kills from Lucy Pufundt and another from Folkening. Up 24–10, Udovich delivered the final kill to seal a convincing 25–10 win.

In the second, Loras capitalized on an early block and a service ace to jump ahead 3–1. Augustana steadied itself with a kill from Gustafson, and the Vikings tied it at 3–3 after a Loras attack error, but the Duhawks responded with a 5–1 spurt fueled by kills from Finch, Schroeder, and Meyer to go up 7–4. The Vikings would fall 10-5 but sideout and flip the script as a kill from Richards, followed by a service ace from Rizzo and a string of kills from Coley and Richards, sparked a 5–0 run to erase a 10–5 deficit and tied the match 10–10. Both teams traded two points and a sideout to 14–13, then traded points to 16-15 in favor of the Vikings. Loras countered with a 5-1 stretch, using two straight blocks and an attack error followed up by two kills to surge up 20–17.

The Vikings responded with a composed 5–1 swing, including kills from Carbone and Richards and back-to-back kills from Folkening, plus a Loras hitting error to take a 22–21 lead. After Finch tied it, Queckboerner found a kill, and Jones helped close the door at the net as a block gave Augustana a set point at 24–22. Finch delayed it with a kill, but Kirchner finished it herself with a setter dump to secure the 25–23 win and put the Vikings up 2–0 in the match.

In the third, three straight attack errors by the Vikings helped the Duhawks build a 5–1 lead, but Augustana responded with a 5–0 run, sparked by a kill from Folkening, back-to-back service aces from Abby Kirchner, and a Loras hitting error to tie it at 5–5. The Vikings briefly went in front 6–5, but Loras answered with a 4-1 run, aided by four Augustana errors and a bad set, to regain a 9–7 advantage. The Duhawks took the lead to 10–8, but kills from Udovich and Carbone, as well as a Leah Rizzo service ace, gave the Vikings the lead at 11–10.

From there, Loras strung together its best stretch of the set, a 6-0 run, fueled by kills from Finch and Jarzabek and three straight Augustana attack errors, to make it 16–11. The deficit grew to 18–13 and later 20–14, but Augustana refused to fold. Kills from Coley, Udovich, and Richards traded points to 23-17 in favor of Loras. A Udovich kill followed by a Richards kill sparked a 6–1 rally, while two straight Loras errors cut the score to 23–21. Augustana had a chance to tie it, but an attack error gave Loras set point at 24–22. Coley kept the Vikings alive with a clutch kill to make it 24–23, but Finch ended it with a kill, sealing a 25–23 win for Loras.

In the fourth, Pufundt opened with a kill, Coley followed up with her own, and a block from Folkening and Udovich helped fuel a 5–2 start. Loras briefly narrowed the gap to 5–4 behind consecutive kills from Cat Meyer, but Augustana immediately responded and never trailed again. The Vikings flipped momentum for good with a 9–2 scoring run. Carbone took over offensively, recording four kills, while Kacie Swanson added a service ace, and Rizzo continued distributing. Coley extended the lead with another kill, and Richards followed a Rizzo ace with a kill. The Vikings surged ahead 14–6.

Augustana continued to apply pressure, building an 18–7 advantage behind more kills from Carbone and Coley, along with a Rizzo ace. After leading 22-9, Loras capitalized on Augustana's errors to close the gap to 22-13. Pufundt broke the run with a kill, and Udovich hammered one to make it 24–14. After a Loras sideout, Augustana closed the frame emphatically as Grace Lichthardt delivered the final kill, securing a 25–15 set win and clinching the match 3-1.

Augustana finished the match hitting .188 as a team with 59 kills, 50 assists, eight service aces, and 10 total blocks. The offense was led by Coley, who posted a team-high 13 kills on a .333 hitting clip and added a block assist. Carbone was highly efficient with nine kills on 13 swings for a .615 hitting percentage, while Carli Udovich contributed 8 kills. Gustafson and Richards each tallied 7 kills, with Richards also serving two aces and recording a team-high 17 digs. Folkening added six kills and Pufundt added four. Rizzo ran the offense with 24 assists, 13 digs, and three service aces, while Kirchner added 19 assists, five digs, two aces, and a block assist. Turley added 14 digs and two assists.

In their second Senior Day match-up, the Augustana Vikings made quick work of Grinnell, beating the Pioneers 3-1 by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-16.

In the first, Augustana jumped out to a 10–2 lead behind early kills from Udovich and Pufundt, a block by Carbone and one from Gustafson, and a service ace from Kirchner. Following a 2-1 stretch by Grinell, Richards sparked a 5-1 Viking run that included Pioneer errors and was capped by a Rizzo ace to push the score to 16–5. Grinnell briefly countered with a small run fueled by a kill from Ava Mlynski, a service ace, and a block on Udovich to close the gap to 17–10. The score would mature in favor of the Vikings to 20-15. A kill from Carbone, a service ace from Queckboerner, a setter kill from Kirchner, followed by a kill from Richards extended the advantage to 24–15. After Grinnell scored twice on Viking errors, Augustana finished the set as Grinnell's attack went long, securing a 25–17 set win.

In the second set, Grinnell opened the second set with a kill, but Augustana quickly responded and settled into rhythm. Udovich and Kirchner combined for an early kill, and a service ace from Queckboerner would have the Vikings take a 5–4 lead. Grinnell battled to tie at 7-7, but Udovich, Folkening, and Richards added kills as part of a 5–1 run, capitalizing on a Grinnell attack error to extend the advantage to 11–7. Grinnell would battle back to within 1, but Augustana continued to control the tempo using kills from Queckboerner and Richards to push the lead to 17–12. Defensively, the Vikings made a statement when Queckboerner and Carbone teamed up for a block to maintain momentum.

After falling behind 17–12, Grinnell mounted its strongest push of the set, pulling within 17–15 thanks to a trio of kills. But Augustana answered immediately. Carbone sparked the response with a kill, Queckboerner delivered a service ace, and Richard found hardwood to restore control at 20-16. From there, the teams traded kills to a 22-18 Vikings lead, and the Vikings closed the door with a 3–1 stretch, highlighted by kills from Queckboerner, Coley, and Carbone to take the set 25-19.

In the third, Augustana came out firing from the service line, as Alexis Richards opened the set with three straight service aces to give the Vikings a 3–0 lead. Grinnell responded by taking advantage of miscues, scoring six of the next seven points on Augustana errors and using three kills to take a 6–4 advantage. After a kill from Queckboerner stopped the run, Grinnell capitalized again as Augustana committed an error, and Sullivan added a kill to make it 8–6.

A 6-3 Grinnell run that included four Viking attack errors allowed the Pioneers to stretch their lead to 14–9. Augustana mounted a strong response as back-to-back kills from Coley, a Carbone kill, and back-to-back kills from Queckboerner, followed by a Kirchner service ace, fueled a 6–2 run, pulling the Vikings within 16–15. However, back-to-back errors and a kill, despite a response from Richards, helped the Pioneers rebuild a 20–17 cushion. Refusing to fade, Augustana went on a 4-2 run with kills from Udovich, Gustafson, a Rizzo service ace, and another kill from Folkening, cutting the deficit to 22–21. Grinnell's Millie Leonard delivered a kill to make it 23–21, before Gustafson struck again to bring Augustana within one at 23–22. A Richards service error gave the Pioneers a set point, but Grinnell missed a serve of its own to keep the Vikings alive at 24–23. On the final rally, Leonard hammered one home to close out the frame 25–23 and take their first set of the match.

In the fourth, after a brief 1–1 start, the Vikings used kills from Queckboerner and Gustafson to tie at 3–3 before Grinnell strung together a 5-1 run to go ahead 6–3. Trading errors and a kill from the Pioneers matured the score to 8-5. From there, Augustana flipped the momentum with a 5–1 surge fueled by four Grinnell errors to give the Vikings the lead, while Coley capped the run with a kill to make it 10–9 Vikings. The Pioneers would never gain the lead for the rest of the match. After siding out, Coley added a kill on the next rally, followed by two kills from Queckboerner.  A service ace from Queckboerner pushed it to 15–11. The Vikings didn't let up. Gustafson and Folkening hammered down kills, and after Grinnell cut the deficit to 17–15 behind two service aces from Hayley Taka, Augustana responded with a commanding 8–1 finishing run. Coley and Folkening combined on a block before each adding kills. Queckboerner delivered back-to-back kills for match point. Elle Jones sealed the set with a kill from Rizzo to secure the 25–16 set victory and take the match 3-1.

Augustana finished the match hitting .140 as a team, totaling 51 kills, 49 assists, 12 service aces, and 11 total blocks while holding Grinnell to a .041 efficiency.
