ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team defeated the Greenville Panthers on Saturday by a score of 66-45.
Paige Melton was quick to get Augie on the board with a jump shot off a pass by
Audrey Erickson.
Cali Papez and Erickson continued the momentum with layups in the paint to lead 6-0 after a minute of play. An eight-point run moved the Vikings up by 12 points, and the team saw this lead once more after a jump shot by
Jazmeriah Jones. Jones followed with a successful three-pointer to create a 15-point game with a score of 21-6 after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second, Augie collected seven points in two minutes with two free throws by
Tia Lewis, creating a 21-point advantage. At 7:11, Erickson stole possession from the Panthers and followed with a fast break layup to make a 29-7 game. The Vikings saw a 22-point gap two more times, with Greenville collecting the final six points to move the game 33-17 entering halftime.
Returning to the court, both teams traded shots before Augie pulled away with seven points from
Tia Lewis. The Vikings maintained the upper hand throughout the remainder of the quarter, with the smallest gap being 19.
In the final 10 minutes of action, a good free throw by
Ciara Hull pulled the Vikings ahead by 22 points once more. The team converted nine straight points with shots by Papez at the charity line, moving the gap to as much as 28 at 58-30. The teams traded points, but the Panthers never got under a 20-point difference to conclude the game 66-45.
Nine different individuals scored in the win, with Lewis leading with 14 points, while Papez followed with 12. Erickson notched three assists and nine rebounds.
With the win, Augie moves to 2-1 on the season and will be back in action on Nov. 29 at Webster.
