Men's water polo splits day one of MPSF Championships

STANFORD, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team split day one of the MPSF Championships. The team defeated the Washington & Jefferson Presidents by a score of 21-4, and fell to the Stanford Cardinals 25-7. 

In game one, Ian Palmroos scored early to put the Vikings ahead, and Stevan Rasic followed with another off a pass from Mark Addison. Augie put up another score on the next possession, with Addison adding to the scoreboard, with Rhys Lomax notching the assist. At 3:55, Oskar Bannister found the back of the net on a pass by Palmroos to make a 4-0 score. Rasic closed out the first quarter with a successful shot, with Alden Brinkmeier being credited with the assist. The Vikings held the President's scoreless after eight minutes of action to lead 5-0. 

Palmroos found the back of the net after 40 seconds of play, and Washington & Jefferson followed with their first goal of the day. Palmroos was quick to follow with Lomax notching the assist before Brinkmeier grabbed a shot of his own to move the game to a score of 8-1. The Presidents tallied another, but Cole Faux put up a shot with 32 seconds left in the half off a pass from Bannister to create a 9-2 game.

Returning to action, Palmroos scored first for the third time and followed with another two more to move the game to 12-2. At 3:51, Mason Landes notched a successful shot off a pass from Bence Kovacs-Siklosi, and Palmroos quickly followed with another goal, with Trentin Lechleinter credited with the assist. Washington & Jefferson tallied a shot with two minutes remaining, but Uros Ramic put up a shot with 42 seconds remaining in the quarter to make a 15-3 score. 

In the final quarter, Kovacs-Siklosi notched a goal before Ronin Araucto tallied one of his own. With three minutes remaining, Bannister found the back of the net on a penalty shot, and Ramic moved the game to 19-3 off a pass by Faux. The Presidents found another, but Addison and Ramic closed out the game with shots apiece to close the game 21-4.

In the win, 10 individuals scored, with Palmroos leading with seven, while Kovacs-Siklosi had three assists.  Lawson Soukup saved seven shots in goal and one steal. 

In game two against Stanford, the Cardinals scored six shots in the opening eight minutes, while holding Augie scoreless. In the second quarter, Stanford found four more before Addison notched one 6-on-5 to make a 10-1 score. The Cardinals tallied another before Rasic found the back of the net off a pass by Bannister. The teams traded points once more, with Rasic notching the one for Augie and Addison being credited with the assist. Stanford closed the half to make a score of 13-3. 

Returning to action, Kovacs-Siklosi scored early, but the Cardinals followed with five to pull away by a score of 18-4. With 37 seconds left in the period, Rasic found the back of the net with Lechleitner notching the assist. Stanford closed the third out with a successful goal to make a 19-5 score entering the final eight minutes of play. 

In the fourth, the Cardinals put up four more points before Araucto secured a goal for Augie. Stanford found two more before Lomax closed out the game with a successful shot off a pass by Bannister to close the game with a score of 25-7.

Five different Vikings scored in the game, with Rasic leading with three, while Addison and Bannister notched two assists apiece. Soukup tallied five saves in goal. 

With the split record, Augie moves to 15-8 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow to battle Austin.
