ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augsutana Vikings women's wrestling team clinched a tight battle with a score of 23-21 over the Elmhurst Bluejays, while the men fell by a score of 38-9.
Mia Vazquez kicked it off for the women's team after an 8-0 decision in the 103 weight division to secure the early 3-0 lead. The Bluejays followed with victories in the next three categories, with
Gwen Burbridge and Hannah Subonni-Kaufman collecting one point in their respective weight classes. Augie followed with the next four matchups, starting with athlete of the week
Moni Griffin at 131 with an 11-0 technical fall. In the 138 division,
Bri Bynum pinned her opponent to regain the 12-11 lead.
Aine Moffit pinned her opponent at 145 before
Maryam Ndiaye converted a 10-0 in the 160 weight class to create a 23-11 gap. Elmhurst closed the battle with wins in the 180 and 207 classes, but the Vikings sealed the 23-21 win.Â
On the men's side, the Bluejays secured the lead after conquering the first six weight classes. In the 174 category,
Jack Miller defeated his opponent by an 11-5 decision to obtain three team points.
Braiden Young claimed the 197 weight division with a pin to tally six team points.
With the win, the women start CCIW action 1-0, while the men sit at 0-1. The teams will be back in action on Nov. 22 for the 8-Woman/Man Battles at UW-Eau Claire, Wis.
