Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Men's water polo wraps up Gary Troyer Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team finished the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday. The team defeated the La Verne Leopards by a score of 14-13 before a big win over the Occidental Tigers by a score of 15-9.

In game one, Oskar Bannister won the spring to allow Stevan Rasic to get Augie on the board early. The Leopards followed with one of their own before Bannister found the back of the goal to pull ahead once more. Mark Addison tallied another off a pass by Bannister to make a 3-1 score. At 4:04, Ian Palmroos fired a shot to the back of the cage, and Addison collected the assist. Cole Faux collected the Vikings' fifth shot off a pass by Ben Symington. La Verne grabbed a successful shot to make a 5-2 score after eight minutes of play. 

In the second period, Bannister moved the difference to four before the Leopards tallied another. Both teams remained scoreless until 1:31 when Rasic dented the twine off a pass by Alden Brinkmeier. La Verne added another point before Symington closed the first half with an even-strength shot to make the score 8-4. 

Returning to action, the Leopards added two and held Augie to just one, with the goal coming from Palmroos with an assist by Symington. La Verne added another before Bannister fired a shot to the back of the goal to create a 10-6 score. Palmroos tallied another to the scoresheet, and Rasic followed with one of his own to double score 12-6. At 1:26, Brinkmeier put it in the back of the cage to close the third period 13-7. 

In the final eight minutes of play, the Leopards put up two before Palmroos tallied a successful shot. La Verne collected four shots to close out the period, but was unable to take the lead to finish the game with a final score of 14-13. 

Palmroos led the team with four goals, while Bannister followed with three and Symington tallied two assists. Declan Hutton saved nine shots and had two steals in his 32 minutes of play. 

In game two, Davis scored two goals early in the first period to grab the early lead before the Tigers followed with one of their own. Both teams remained scoreless until Rasic found the back of the cage with 55 seconds remaining, and Occidental closed the period out with a goal to make a 3-2 score after eight minutes of play. 

In the second period, the Tigers evened the score at three apiece before Brinkmeier regained the lead for the Vikings. Neither team found the back of the net for the remained of the half to create a 4-3 score entering halftime. 

Returning to action after the break, Bannister fired a shot to the back of the net to create a two-point gap before the Tigers moved the difference back to one. Lechleitner dented the twine after a turnover by Occidental, and the Tigers tallied another. Leslie shoots and scores off a pass by Lomax to create a 7-5 score. Brinkmeier found the back of the cage to move the difference to three before Occidental closed the gap back to two. 

In the final eight minutes of play, Bannister found the first goal after Lechleitner won the sprint. Palmroos followed with a successful shot off a pass by Davis, and Landes scored off a pass by Davis to move the gap to 11-6. The Tigers tallied another, but Addison beat the goalie off a pass by Lomax, and Occidental created a 12-8 score. Lomax and Rasic closed out the game with goals to take the game 14-8. 

10 different Vikings collected goals in the win, and Hutton finished with eight saves in his 32 minutes in goal. 

With the two wins, Augie moves to 4-4 on the season and will be back in action on Oct. 11 for McKendree Mini.
