Women's volleyball defeats North Central

Box Score NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team defeated the North Central Cardinals on Wednesday in four sets.

In a neck-to-neck first set, the Vikings collected the first four points and held the advantage until four consecutive points by the Cardinals moved them ahead 6-5. Both teams drew even three times before a four-point run, with three of the points being a service ace by Carmela Carbone. An attack error by North Central created a 13-9 gap, but the home team claimed the next four points to tie the game at 13 apiece. Augie pulled ahead once more after kills by Mallory Coley and Alita Folkening, and an attack error made the score 16-13. North Central collected the next six before the Vikings collected five to create a 21-19 score after back-to-back attack errors. The Cardinals made a small run with four points to make a 23-21 until a kill by Coley and an attack error drew the score even at 23 apiece. The teams tied three additional times before Augie secured the final two points after a kill by Lanah Queckboener and a bad set closed the first set with a score of 28-26.

In the second set, North Central ran away with the lead after collecting 14 points and holding Augie to three. The Cardinals held the advantage for the remainder of the set to tie the match overall 1-1. Augie switched the momentum in the third set after a 9-1 run to take the early advantage. The Vikings held the upper hand with a service ace by Kacie Swanson, stretching the gap to as much as nine at 17-8. Augie found this lead once more after an attack error by the home team to make a 21-12 score. The team created this gap twice more after kills by Carbone and Grace Gustafson, with the Cardinals collecting the next four to make a score of 23-18. Queckboener closed the set with a successful attack to move Augie ahead 2-1 in the match.     

The Cardinals took the early lead in the fourth set until the Vikings followed with seven consecutive points to pull ahead 10-4. Augie created a 10-point gap after a five-point run to generate an 18-8 score. A solo block by Folkening created the largest gap of 11, and the team stayed ahead by 10 points three more times to conclude the set 25-15 after a block by Folkening and Carly Udovich. 

Queckboener led the team with 13 kills, while Leah Rizzo notched 18 assists and Katelyn Turley had 15 digs. 

With the win, Augie improves to 11-11 overall and 2-4 in the CCIW. The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow for day one of the UW-Whitewater Invite to battle No. 11 Colby.
