Men's water polo finishes weekend perfect

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team finished their five game stretch at MPSF Weekend I with victories against Washington & Jefferson by a score of 21-12 and Penn State Behrend 21-13.

In game 1, Augustana and the Presidents traded blows early in the first quarter, battling through three ties and multiple exclusions. Ian Palmroos opened the scoring before Washington & Jefferson responded with a penalty goal to even the match at 1–1. Stevan Rasic found the back of the net twice in quick succession, assisted by Mark Addison, as the Vikings pulled ahead 3–1. The Presidents countered with two tallies from Dillon Parker, while Tyler Leslie and Oskar Bannister connected to keep Augie in front. A late 6-on-5 conversion by Topher Mitchell knotted the score 4–4 heading into the second.

Washington & Jefferson briefly grabbed a 5–4 advantage early in the second quarter, but Augustana answered with a decisive four-goal run. Rhys Lomax tied the game with help from Alden Brinkmeier, and Palmroos restored the lead moments later off a James Davis assist. Bence Kovacs-Siklosi extended the margin with a setup from Brinkmeier to make it 7–5 before a late Presidents goal trimmed the halftime score to 7–6.

The Vikings took full control after intermission, outscoring W&J 8–2 in the third frame. Palmroos and Lomax each scored early off Brinkmeier assists to open an 9–6 cushion. Rasic converted a penalty and Bannister added a pair of strikes, while Connor Logan tallied two goals including a man-up conversion off a Mason Landes assist to stretch the lead to 15–8 entering the final quarter.

Augustana's depth carried the fourth, as Kovacs-Siklosi netted back-to-back goals and Palmroos completed his fourth of the match. Addison added two more, and Ben Symington and Leslie helped seal the 21–12 victory with efficient ball movement down the stretch.

The Vikings finished with 21 goals on efficient shooting, including five multi-goal scorers. Palmroos led all players with four goals, while Bannister and Kovacs-Siklosi each posted hat tricks. Rasic scored three times including one penalty goal, and Brinkmeier dished out a game-high five assists. Addison, Lomax, and Logan contributed two goals apiece, with Leslie and Symington each contributed one. Goalkeeper Lawson Soukup anchored the defense with several key stops in the first half.

In game 2, the Vikings came out firing, scoring five unanswered goals to open the contest. Addison struck first off a setup from Lomax before Bannister doubled the lead on a assist from goalkeeper Soukup. Lomax converted a man-up, Rasic buried a counterattack, and Addison added his second as Augustana built a commanding 5–0 cushion midway through the period. The Lions pulled two back late, but Augie maintained a 5–2 advantage after the opening quarter.

Augustana's attack continued to click in the second frame, led by Kovacs-Siklosi, who converted a penalty drawn by Uros Ramic and later added a counter goal off a Lomax steal. Palmroos and Trentin Lechleitner each joined the scoring column, while Addison completed his first-half hat trick to help the Vikings stretch their lead to 11–5 at intermission.

Rasic powered the third quarter for Augustana, recording a natural goal, a 6-on-5 conversion, and another strike assisted by Davis to notch his own hat trick. Behrend answered with a series of goals to narrow the gap to 14–10 late in the frame, but Landes scored from close range off a Logan assist to steady the Vikings' momentum entering the fourth.

The Vikings closed strong behind a balanced attack and relentless pace. Lomax and Ramic combined for four straight goals to rebuild a double-digit cushion, while Addison and Kovacs-Siklosi continued to facilitate in transition. Addison capped the night with his fourth goal on a late man-up to seal the 21–13 victory and complete a dominant day for the Vikings.

Addison would finish with five goals on an efficient 5/7 shooting performance, also adding an assist, two steals, and two blocks. Soukup finished the match with 11 saves, three steals, and three assists. Rasic would continue an impressive weekend with four goals of his own and added a block. Davis would be a menace on defense with three steals and convert on the offensive side with three assists. Lomax and Bannister would distribute the offense with four assists each, Bannister would add a goal for the Vikings. Lomax would finish the match with three goals, Ramic and Kovacs-Siklosi each added two goals, while Ronin Araucto, Lecheitner, Landes, and Palmroos contributed one goal each.

The Vikings will be back in action Nov. 8-9 for MPSF Weekend II with a four game slate.
