Swimming & diving teams roll over Loras in season opener

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams both cruised to a season-opening win over the Loras Duhawks on Saturday. The men were victorious by a score of 157-52, while the women won by a final of 182-31.

Between the two teams, the Vikings won 24 of 26 total events. On the women's side, the Vikings' team of Natalie Salazar, Ava Kauffeld, Charlotte Vogen, and Kendle Mihm won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.07. Augie also saw a win in the other relay, with Mya Pheneger, Vogen, Caitlin Stoddard, and Mihm winning the 200-yard freestyle with a final time of 1:42.51.

Elsewhere, Savanna Shapley was the winner of the 1650-yard freestyle after clocking a time of 19:00.48. In the 200-yard freestyle, Giselle Koonce finished first with a time of 2:04.15, and also conquered the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 5:33.74. Mihm clocked a time of 24.94 in the 50-yard freestyle to finish first and claimed the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.92. In the 200-yard individual medley, Kauffeld finished first with a time of 2:22.26, and Victoria Krol finished with a time of 1:03.69 to conquer the 100-yard fly. Salazar claimed the 100-yard back with a time of 1:04.71, and Livy Sholl finished the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:12.22. On the one-meter diving board, Kate Kucera was the top scorer with a final score of 173.95.

On the men's side, Luke Rettig, Matthew Meyer, Teddy McGuire, and Bjorn Sievert secured the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.31. In the final relay, Retting, Sievert, McGuire, and Emanuel Anguelov secured the 200-yard relay with a time of 1:27.15.

Elsewhere, Carter Lavold claimed the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:40.54. Rettig secured the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21:59 and the 100-yard fly at 51:46. Michael Garland touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.12 and the 200-yard individual medley at 2:02.63. Cesar Castillo finished first in the 100-yard backstroke at 55:01, and Ethan Herstedt followed with first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.23. On the one-meter diving board, Ryan DeLand secured first with a final score of 161.80.

Both the men and women begin the new campaign 1-0. The teams will be back in action on Oct. 17-18 at Grinnell.
