ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team concluded the Fred Johnson Duals on Saturday in the Tim Dodge Mezzanine with a 4-0 record. The team picked up wins against the Eureka Red Devils, Quincy Hawks, Westminster Blue Jays, and Triton Trojans.
In the first round, the Vikings collected a 46-11 victory over Eureka. Jack Reina kicked off the matchup with a forfeit in the 125 class and the Red Devils followed with wins in the next two weight classes to make it 11-6. Mikey Rodriguez converted a 17-7 major decision in the 149 category to get within one with a score of 11-10. The Vikings conquered the remaining matchups, with Michael Macias, Jack Patting, and Jack Miller pinning their opponent in their respective weight classes. Braiden Young and Jacob Badger notched forfeits in the 184 and 197 slots before Teke Nieto pinned his opponent in the 285 weight class to secure the 46-11 win.
The Vikings defeated Quincy by a score of 21-18 in round two of the dual meetings. The Hawks secured the 125 slot before Samuel Deyro collected a 14-3 major decision in the 133 weight class to make a 4-3 score. Quincy secured the next two weight classes before Macias snatched a 12-2 major decision to turn the scoring back in Augie's favor. Patting kept the momentum going with a 4-2 decision in the 165 category and Miller collected a 5-2 decision in the 174 slot to take the one-point advantage. Quincy snatched the 184 division to regain the lead but Badger grabbed a 13-4 major decision in the 197 matchup to grab the upper hand by one point before Josh Woodrey conquered the 285 class with a 4-1 major decision to find the 21-18 victory.
Augie secured a 34-12 victory over Westminster in round three. Reina kicked off the matchup with a 9-4 decision before Deyro pinned his opponent to secure a 9-0 advantage. The Blue Jays notched the 141 class before Rodriguez pinned his foe, while Macias grabbed a 14-7 decision. Patting collected a 10-1 major decision to make it a 22-3 score, but then Westminster found victory in the 174 and 184 categories. Badger added six points to the team's score and Woodrey closed the match with a pin to grab the 34-12 victory.
In the final round, Augie defeated Triton by a score of 31-18. The Trojans grabbed the 125 weight class prior to Khadyn Jacobs collecting a forfeit to even the score at 6-6. Triton secured the 141 division and Kameron Hanel notched a 12-2 major decision in the 149 division. Macias pinned his opponent before Patting snatched a 5-4 decision to make a 19-11 score. The Trojans won the 174 and final battle of the night, but could not catch up as Augie held on for the 31-18 victory.
With the four wins, Augie moves to 7-2 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, January 7 for a non-conference battle against St. Ambrose in the Tim Dodge Mezzanine.
