ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams will be in action for the first time in 2025 on Saturday, January 11 when they welcome in the Coe Kohawks and Monmouth Fighting Scots for a tri-meet in the Anne Greve Lund Natatorium.
The Augustana women are currently 4-0 on the year and are competing for the first time since taking fourth place at the Wheaton Invite in early December. Two weeks prior, the Vikings participated in their last dual, defeating Grinnell by a score of 104-79 on Senior Day. The Vikings were victorious in the 200 medley relay as the team of
Hailey Glasnovich,
Livy Sholl,
Zoe Heiar, and
Giselle Koonce won by just .49 seconds with a time of 1:53.26. Augustana also claimed the win in the 200 freestyle relay, with Glasnovich,
Kendle Mihm,
Caitlin Stoddard, and
Mara Walker earning a mark of 1:42.17. The Vikings' third relay win came in the 400 free relay as Koonce, Mihm,
Brooke Walker, and M. Walker finished in 3:44.48.
Augie took four of the top five spots in the 200-yard freestyle, led by M. Walker's first-place finish in 1:56.97. She was the only swimmer in the race with a sub two-minute tme. The top two spots in the 50 freestyle belonged to Augustana as Mihm came in first with a time of 24.83, followed by Stoddard in second at 25.73. Mihm also led a group of five Vikings in the top five in the 100-yard freestyle with a winning time of 54.87. Heiar added on to the Vikings' success with a win in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:01.52.
On the men's side, the team took at fifth at the Wheaton Invite and will be competing in its first head-to-head matchup since a 101-85 close loss to Grinnell. Augie was the winner of the 200 freestyle relay as the team of
Lucas Rettig,
Kacper Cebula,
Bjorn Sievert, and
Gavin McCorry finished in a time of 44.13. McCorry also saw success in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing second with a mark of 1:46.92, just .05 seconds behind first. He also claimed second in the 100-yard backstroke. In the 200 IM, the Vikings grabbed three of the top four spots, led by Cebula in second with a time of 1:58.43. Augie also went No. 2 through 4 in the 50 free style as Sievert snagged second in 22.07. Rettig led a group of three Vikings in the top four in the 100-yard butterfly, ending with a final time of 52.67.
Albert Buvary finished second in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 49.11, while
Carter Lavold swam a time of 4:57.37 in the 500 freestyle to finish second.
Michael Garland and
Tommy Anderson went No. 2 and 3 in the 100-yard breaststroke and were separated by just .12 seconds.
Monmouth enters Saturday with a 1-2 record on the men's side and 2-1 mark on the women's. The women recently bested Millkin in their last dual by a single point back on November 16 before taking first place in Beloit a week later. The men also defeated Millikin by a score of 115-62. The Scots and Vikings both met earlier this season in Monmouth, resulting in a pair of wins for Augustana.
Coe sits 0-3 on the men's side and 1-2 on the women's. The women recently fell in their most recent head-to-head encounter back in mid-November by a score of 192-76. The men also were defeated by the Pioneers, 191-57. Saturday will be the first meeting for Coe and Augustana since the 2013-14 season.
