PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Friday in Wisconsin, falling to the Wartburg Knights and UW-Platteville Pioneers each by a score of 3-1.
After Wartburg took the opening set of match one, the Vikings bounced back with a 25-22 victory to even the contest at one win apiece. In the second, the two teams played a back-and-forth battle that resulted in an 18-18 deadlock. From there, the Vikings saw a go-ahead kill by
Grace Gustafson before consecutive attack errors by the Knights gave Augustana its largest lead of the frame. Wartburg pulled within one twice more, but a pair of late kills by
Emily Schipper helped sealed the game by a score of 25-22. The Knights returned the favor with a 25-22 win of their own in the third and followed it with a seven-point victory in the fourth to claim the match win.
Two Vikings finished in double figures in kills, led by Schipper with 14 and Gustafson with 10. Schipper also led a balanced attack with 15 digs, while
Kylie Collachia added 34 assists.
In match two against the Pioneers, Augie responded to a nine-point loss in the opener with a 25-21 win in set two to even the match. Trailing for most of the game, the Vikings used a 4-0 run to turn an 18-14 deficit into a tie. The team's hot stretch continued with three of the next four points to grab a 21-19 lead. Another scoring spurt closed out the set, capping off an 11-3 run to end the frame. UW-Platteville notched wins in the next two sets to secure the 3-1 victory.
Schipper again led the way with 15 kills, while
Ashley Awbrey had a team-high 18 digs.
With the losses, Augustana drops to 6-8 on the season. The team will return home to face Monmouth on Tuesday.
