The Augustana Vikings men's golf team finished the season with their best placement in the CCIW since 2003-04. The team competed in 11 competitions throughout the 2023-24 season and collected a third-place finish at the CCIW Championship in early May.
The Vikings opened their season at home with the Highland Championship, where they took a fourth-place finish out of 16 teams. Augie amassed a team score of 602 and was led on the links by Alexandre Thery, who began his collegiate career with a score of 147 to place seventh individually. Sam Evenson trailed behind with a total of 151, while Patrick McGrath and Kevin Cortez tallied 152 to place in the top 20. Augustana finished one stroke behind third and just three strokes back from second. The Vikings took a short trip to Milan, Ill. for the Duane Chaney Invitational. Evenson led the tournament with a 146 that helped lead the team to a second-place finish. The junior secured a first-place tie and entered a playoff, where he notched a birdie at the first hole and carded a par in the second for sole possession. Cortez and Vilhelm Johansson each totaled 156 to finish in a six-way tie for 10th. After both days, Cortez racked up a team high of 25 pars.
After a two-week break, the team traveled to Kansasville, Wis., for the Midwest Region Classic. McGrath led Auige with a top 20 finish in 17th, carding a total of 147. Evenson scored 151 with Thery behind with 152 to sit inside the top 50. As a team, Augie shot 602, just one stroke behind seventh place. The Vikings stayed on the road for the one-day CCIW Preview held in Peoria, Ill. Evenson led the charge for the Vikings after shooting 2-over par with a round score of 74, good for 16th place overall. Theory was next for Augie, checking in at 26th with a score of 77. Adam Soczka finished in a tie for 38th with teammates Cortez and Johansson with a score of 79. As a team, Augie notched a final tally of 309, just six strokes out of seventh and eight strokes behind sixth.
The Vikings returned to action after a short break for two competitions before the spring season. Augie started at the Central Fall Classic, where they posted a strong showing finishing fourth out of 17 teams. The team boasted three top-15 performances beginning with Johansson, who finished ninth with a total of 153. Evenson and Thery finished one stroke behind at 154, ending in a tie for 14th. The Vikings tallied a final score of 618 to place fourth, just three strokes behind third. Augustana stayed on the road for the Region V Showcase in South Bend, Ind., earning a sixth-place finish and a combined total of 622. Thery was Augie's leader of the outing with a 17th-place finish and a score of 154 and 21 pars in the two-day contest. Soczka scored 159, while Cortez and Evenson holed 160. Johansson and Cortez had a total of six birdies and Soczka trailed with five.
Augie kicked off the spring season in Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Shootout with a sixth-place finish and a total score of 611. Evenson finished the weekend in ninth with a total of 148, and Thery followed in 12th with a score of 149. Two weeks later, the team returned to Peoria, Ill., to attend the Cougar Spring Preview, where the team won their first tournament in nearly 22 years. Thery was crowned the individual champion of the tournament with a total score of 144 to win by three shots. Evenson finished in sixth with a score of 150 and secured an eagle, while McGrath came in seventh. This weekend also marked the first time in eight years that the Vikings defeated fellow CCIW competitor Millikin in an event. The team continued their road streak in Normal, Ill., for the two-day IWU Invite finishing in a tie for 20th out of 37 teams. Evenson was the leader for the Vikings, earning a top 20 placement out of over 200 golfers in 16th after shooting 147. Thery and Johansson both posted a 95th tie overall. As a team, the Vikings finished with a score of 614 and were just five strokes out of 16th. Augustana returned to the Quad City area for their final road competition before the CCIW championships. The team competed at the Fyre Lake Invitational in Sherrard, Ill., finishing third out of 15 teams. Noah Ehlenbach and Cortez led the Vikings with a score of 79th to finish in a tie for seventh. Evenson followed in a tie for ninth, hitting a total of 80. Johansson and Soczka also finished in the top 20 with a total of 81 to end in a tie for 14th. As a team, the Vikings were only seven shots behind second.
The Vikings returned to home territory for the final regular season event. The men hosted six teams at the Viking Invitational with Augie coming out on top. Johansson finished first for the team with a total of 146. McGrath and Thery followed in second with a score of 147, while Evenson finished in fifth alongside Soczka with 149 after both days. Jakob Stefanowicz obtained 10th place after hitting a total of 150. As a team, the Vikings finished with a score of 583, which was nine strokes ahead of second place.
Augustana concluded their season in Peoria, Ill., at the CCIW Championship, where they earned their first top-three finish in 20 years. The Vikings finished the three-day event with a total of 900 and 36 over par. Thery earned all-conference honors, the first for Augie since 2007, after ending in a tie for 10th with a total of 222. Evenson followed in 17th place after hitting a total of 227, while Johansson finished in a two-way tie for 21st and McGrath placed 23rd. Thery and Evenson's scores place them No. 1 and 2 in the Augustana record book for top three-round marks.
