Track & Field teams begin busy weekend at Rittgers Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Rittgers Invitational hosted by Coe on Thursday. The women placed first out of six teams, while the men finished second out of five. 

On the women's side, Madison Wies found victory in the 3000-meter run, clocking in at 11:09.49 for a new personal record by 23 seconds. Ellie DeFarno followed at 11.16.70 for third and Rylee Noack placed fifth with a time of 11:44.07. Jade Johnson notched second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.27, while Rachael Linskey crossed the finish line at 14.11 to obtain fifth. Johnson also finished the 200-meter dash at 26.87 to secure second place, with Lauren Oelke behind in fifth at 27.83. Oelke placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.00, while Allison Hunt followed in fifth at 17.35. In the 4x400-meter relay, Kira Nelson, Oelke, Elizabeth Hayes, and Hunt ran a time of 4:13.24 for second place. 

In field events, Hunt took the high jump event with a height of 1.49 meters and Grace Jenkins jumped 1.34 meters for third place. Bridget Wunderlich threw 12.16 meters in the shot put event to secure second, with Heather Michalski following with 11.98 meters, and Skyler Barber at 11.09 meters for fifth. Hannah Johnson jumped 4.80 meters in the long jump event to secure third place, while Johnson followed in fourth with 4.59 meters. In the triple jump, Johnson collected 9.92 in her third attempt to secure fourth place, while Hayes jumped 9.77 meters for fifth. Augie took first through third in the javelin throw, starting with Michalski with 34.68 meters, while Amelia Miller threw 30.87 meters and Laina Nelson finished at 30.45 meters. 

On the men's side, Sean Abracia-Wendel placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.41, with Ean Martin following in fifth at 11.78. In the 3000-meter run, Andrew Johns ran a time of 9:14.61 to secure second place, while Joshua Traugott followed in fourth at 9:34.02. Elsewhere, Curtis Baldwin ran a time of 27.51 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish third and Abracia-Wendel crossed the finish line fourth in the 200-meter with a time of 23.75. Abracia-Wendel, Donovan Garro, Colin Stapleton, and Martin came in second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.51.

In field events, Caden Foulke conquered the high jump with a height of 1.73 meters and Aykeem Spivey threw 52.43 meters in the hammer throw event to collect third place. Landon Wierenga threw 34.42 meters in the javelin throw event to secure second and Chris Bajda obtained 31.04 meters for fifth place. 

As a team, the women finished first with 180 points, while the men collected 98 points in second. 

The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow for the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open.
