PEORIA, Ill. -- The Augustana men's golf team won their first tournament in nearly 22 years at WeaverRidge Golf Course in Peoria over the weekend, shooting a score of 600 for an 11-stroke victory. It is the first invitational victory for the Vikings since April 20, 2002 at the Big Blue Classic in Decatur, Ill.
Alexandre Thery was crowned the individual champion of the tournament after shooting round scores of 71 and 73. He led the tournament after day one, but dropped two shots behind after a bogey on the 10th hole on Sunday. He charged back after shooting 2-under par over his last eight holes to win by three shots.
"It was a great weekend on a difficult course in tough conditions and a historic win for such a young squad," said head coach Tom Lawrence. "I could not be more proud of the way our guys handled adversity."
Junior Sam Evenson finished in sixth overall with scores of 73 and 77 and secured an eagle on Saturday, while freshman Patrick McGrath came in seventh. Vilhelm Johansson and Adam Soczka rounded out the top five in scoring.
This weekend also marked the first time in eight years that the Vikings defeated fellow CCIW competitor Millikin in an event. Augustana's "B" team finished 10th in the 17-team event and was led by Luke Petersen's 40th-place finish.
Up next will be split-squad events as one group will play on April 4-5 at the Black Hawk Invite at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill., with two other fivesomes and two individuals heading to the Illinois Wesleyan Invite on April 5-6 in Bloomington, Ill.
