Tennis teams ready for road matches at Coe, Cornell

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's tennis teams will be back in action for a pair of matches on Saturday, each facing off against the Coe Kohawks and Cornell Rams on the road.

The Augie men enter the weekend with a 6-2 overall record and are winners of their last four contests. In their most recent outing, the Vikings defeated Kalamazoo on the road to mark the first-ever win in program history over the Hornets. Augustana completed a 2-0 trip in Michigan back on February 17-18, defeating both Hope and Kalamazoo. The women are looking to bounce back from a 6-3 loss to the Hornets in their most recent match.

The Augustana men will first face off against Coe on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Kohawks enter with a record of 3-4 overall and recently picked up a victory the last time out, defeating UW-Superior by a score of 5-4 at home. All three wins for Coe this season have come on its home court, also earning wins over UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse. The Kohawks hold a 21-4 advantage in the all-time series with the Vikings and have won six of the last eight meetings. Augustana broke a three-match losing streak to Coe last season, winning on the road by a score of 5-4.

Later in the day, the Vikings will take on the Rams at 2 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Cornell sits at 7-2 on the season and has won six matches in a row dating back to February 10. During their winning streak, the Rams have posted a 4-0 record at home and have three wins by a score of 8-1 and one by 9-0. In its most recent outing, Cornell bested St. Ambrose at home by a score of 5-4. Augustana has won 22 of the 23 meetings all-time between the two programs, including last season's 8-1 win in Mount Vernon.

On the women's side, the Vikings will begin in Mount Vernon against Cornell, who enter Saturday with a record of 7-4. The Rams recently had their five-match winning streak come to an end, falling to Grinnell by a score of 9-0 back in the fall. This weekend will be the first matches of the spring for Cornell, beginning with Augustana before a home showdown against St. Ambrose on Sunday. The Rams are currently 4-3 on their home court this season. Augustana is 12-14 all-time against Cornell, but has won six in a row dating back to 2013. The Vikings were victorious last season on the road by a score of 9-0.

Augie will close out the day at Coe at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Kohawks are 8-2 on the year and are riding a five-match winning streak as they enter the spring season. This weekend will be the first spring contests of the year for the Coe women, who came out on top against Central by a score of 7-2 to close out the fall. Augustana holds a 14-9 advantage all-time in the series history, including eight wins in the last nine encounters. The Vikings won last year in Cedar Rapids by a score of 7-2.
