Men's tennis collects two wins to begin spring slate

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 STERLING, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins to begin their spring schedule on Sunday, defeating the Wabash Little Giants by a score of 6-3 and the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks by a final of 5-4. The team also sent a group to Grinnell, Iowa for a pair of matches, falling to the No. 36 ranked Grinnell Pioneers and Iowa Central Tritons by a score of 9-0.

In the team's win over Wabash, the Vikings took two of three doubles matches, beginning at No. 1 with a win from Arthur Hermange and David Larraga by a score of 8-2. Augie also saw victory at No. 2, earning an 8-4 win from Nicolas Navarro and Saman Rezaeyan. The Vikings led 2-1 heading into singles play.

Augustana closed out the match with four wins in singles, grabbing wins at the top four positions. Hermange was victorious at No. 1, defeating his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-4, while Navarro also won in consecutive sets at No. 4 by a final of 7-5, 6-1. Rezaeyan was also a winner in straight sets at the third slot, but needed a tiebreaker to seal the match. Larraga bounced back from a first-set loss to take down his counterpart at No. 2.

In match two against Illinois Tech, the Vikings again saw an early advantage after two wins in doubles action. The same duos earned points for Augie, with Hermange and Larraga at No. 1 and Navarro and Rezaeyan at No. 2 each winning by a score of 8-5.

In singles, Hermange and Larraga each earned wins at the No. 1 and 2 slots for the second time on the day, while Navarro also closed out his perfect day with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 4. The three wins were enough to clinch the match despite Illinois Tech taking the other three in their favor.

With the day's action, the Vikings' record now sits at 3-2 on the season. Augie will be back in action on Saturday, February 10 against UW-Stevens Point.
