Track & field teams wrap up CCIW Championships with fifth-place finish

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the final day of the CCIW Championships on Saturday, with each team finishing in fifth place.

On day one, Anna Boardman secured first place in the 5000-meter event with a time of 18:06.18, 22 seconds faster than the runner-up and a No. 3 mark all-time at Augie. Allison Hunt finished second in the pentathlon high jump with a height of 1.52 meters and fourth place in the 800-meter pentathlon to earn All-Conference and claim the No. 4 spot in Augie's all-time record. In the 60-meter dash, McKenzie Reser finished fifth with a time of 7.85.

On the men's side, Adam Miller, Dean Check, Joe Gibbons, and Joe Langridge crossed the finish line second with a time of 10:18.65 in the distance medley relay, while AJ Banks finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.68. Mike Hudson raced in the heptathlon, where he won the high jump with a height of 1.76 meters, finished fourth in the long jump event with a distance of 6.05 meters, and second in shot put throwing 11.08 meters to put him in second place overall heading into day two. 

In field events, Augie grabbed third through fifth in the weight throw, starting with Aykeem Spivey tossing 18.08 meters to secure third. Luke Cowan grabbed fourth with a mark of 17.39 meters and Magnus Wells placed fifth throwing 17.20 meters. 

Day two was highlighted by a first-place finish by Reser in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.78, also earning fifth in the 400-meter and fourth in the 200-meter. Reser's time of 7.78 in the 60 is just .02 off the school record. Emma Odle crossed the finish line third in the mile with a time of 5:12.71 and placed second in the 3000-meter with a time of 10:16.24, while Boardman followed in third at 10:19.99. Reser, Jordyn Van Santen, Cora Deemer, and Shakira Wade claimed third in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:04.89.

In field events, Rhiannon Marshall placed second in the high jump event with a height of 1.57 meters, while Heather Michalski secured third in the shot put event throwing 13.61 meters, Michalski's mark notched a top 15 placement in the nation.

As a team, the women placed fifth with 77 points, sitting 32.5 points ahead of Millikin in sixth, and improved three spots from their 2023 CCIW Indoor Championships finish. 

On the men's side, Langridge found victory in the 3000-meter with a time of 8:24.31 to claim the conference crown. Banks crossed the line fourth in the 60-meter hurdles clocking in a time of 8.58, while Connor McBride finished fifth in the 400-meter with a time of 50.65. 

In field events, Derek Butts placed third in the pole vault event with a height of 4.65 meters, while Wells grabbed second place in shot put with a mark of 14.96 meters. 

The men finished fifth with 75 points, 17 points ahead of Wheaton, and improved one spot from last season's finish. 

The Vikings track and field teams head to Waverly, Iowa on March 2 for the Wartburg Qualifier.
