WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team was defeated on Saturday in the regular-season finale, falling to the No. 19 ranked Carroll Pioneers by a score of 72-46.
It was a high-scoring opening quarter for both teams as the Vikings hung around and kept it within two possessions through the first 10 minutes. Trailing 12-8,
Corey Whitlock scored the next seven points for the Vikings and Augie found themselves within a point at 16-15 with 1:22 remaining. Carroll answered with the game's next six points and closed the frame with a 7-2 run to take a 23-17 lead into the second period. A 20-8 advantage for the home team broke the game open, holding Augie to just three made shots in the second to make it a 43-25 cushion at the break.
Carroll continued to pull away in third, out-scoring Augustana 22-9. The Pioneers hit 82 percent of their looks in the quarter and held the Vikings to just 29 percent. Augustana owned a plus-margin in the fourth, winning the final 10 minutes by a score of 12-7, but Carroll sealed the game up with a 72-46 final score.
Whitlock led the Vikings with 15 points on the afternoon to go with five rebounds and a block, while
Cali Papez narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Mariola Tesoro also added nine points and four rebounds.
With the loss, Augustana finishes the regular season with a 12-13 record and 7-9 mark in the CCIW. The team has earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament and will take on No. 4 seeded North Central in Naperville, Ill. on Tuesday, February 20 with a scheduled time of 5 p.m.
