Tennis teams set for weekend in Michigan

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Augustana men's and women's tennis teams will head to the state of Michigan for a pair of matches on February 17-18.

The Augustana men enter the weekend with a 4-2 overall record, recently sweeping UW-Stevens Point by a score of 9-0 last Saturday. Augie took the early advantage in the match after winning all three doubles contests. Arthur Hermange and David Larraga were victorious at No. 1, defeating their opponent 8-3, while Saman Rezaeyan and Nicolas Navarro cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 3. Gabriel Luna and Timothee Philip completed the perfect showing in doubles after edging their counterpart at No. 2 with an 8-7 (2) triumph. In singles, five of the six contests went to the Vikings in straight sets. Philip went without dropping a game at No. 5, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Larraga had a successful outcome at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Hermange, Rezaeyan, and Navarro also earned wins in two sets. The final match of the day at No. 3 resulted in a three-set victory for Luna as he completed the 6-7, 6-3, 12-10 comeback win.

Augie will take on the Hope Flying Dutch at 4 p.m CST. Hope enters the weekend with a 2-2 overall record, recently falling by a score of 7-2 to Davenport last Friday at home. The loss broke a stretch of two straight victories for the Dutch. Hope will be looking for its first win at home this season, where they are 0-2. Saturday will serve as the fourth all-time meeting between the Vikings and Dutch, with Augie winning two of the three previous encounters. Hope defeated Augustana last season in Holland by a score of 5-4.

On Sunday, the Vikings will face the Kalamazoo Hornets at 1 p.m. CST. The Hornets are 0-2 on the season, recently falling to Oberlin last Sunday on the road by a score of 6-3. This weekend will be the first contests at home for Kalamazoo this season, beginning on Saturday with a matchup against Anderson. Sunday will be the fifth meeting between Augustana and Kalamazoo, with the Hornets winning all four of the previous showdowns. Kalamazoo defeated Augie last season at home by a score of 8-1.

For the Augie women, the team is coming off a 7-2 victory over UW-Stevens Point last weekend to move its record to 5-4 on the season. Augie had the early advantage after taking two of the three doubles matches, beginning with the No. 1 duo of Hannah Colbert and Caitlyn Hanulikova. The two defeated their opponent by a score of 8-2 and was later followed up with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 by Anna-Maria Huebel and Natasha Gauerke. The Pointers secured the No. 3 position to make it 2-1 in favor of the Vikings heading into singles. Augustana earned the win early in singles with three wins in a row. Colbert made quick work of her opponent at the No. 4 slot, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-0, while Huebel at No. 1 and Hanulikova at No. 2 also won in straight sets. Maitreyi Shrikhande also coasted a victory at No. 5 to secure the other point for the Vikings, taking down her opponent by a score of 6-3, 6-0.

The Vikings will take on Hope on Saturday at 4 p.m. CST, who enter the weekend with a 3-1 record. The Dutch picked up their first win of the season at home last weekend,defeating Oberlin by a score of 8-1 to move their winning streak to three matches. Augie is 1-6 all-time against Hope, dropping last season's contest on the road by a score of 9-0.

Augustana will close out the weekend on Sunday against Kalamazoo at 9 a.m. CST. The Hornets are currently 2-0 on the season, recently picking up a pair of 6-3 victories at home over Wooster and Oberlin last weekend. Sunday will be the fourth-ever meeting between the Vikings and Hornets, with Kalamazoo holding a 2-1 advantage in the series. Augustana fell on the road last season by a score of 5-4.
