ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team finished in fourth place out of 11 teams at the 2023-24 CCIW Championships on Thursday, where five individuals finished in the top five.
Jacob Badger conquered the 197 weight division after receiving a bye to move to the quarterfinals, where he converted a 15-5 major decision against MSOE. In the semifinals, Badger generated a 12-2 major decision against North Central and secured a 7-2 decision against Concordia (Wis.) in the championship to win the title. Badger is the first CCIW champion for Augie since Adarios Jones in 2019.
Three wrestlers secured second place in their respective weight classes, starting with Trevor Boryla in the 133 category, where he started with a win via fall over Concordia and Elmhurst to move to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Boryla grabbed a 16-8 major decision over Millikin before falling to nationally-ranked opponent from North Central in the championship. Michael Macias also placed second in the 149 division and started his day with a 17-0 technical fall over Wheaton. In the quarterfinals, Macias earned a fall victory against Illinois Wesleyan prior to notching a 8-3 decision in the semifinals against Aurora. In the 285 weight class, Josh Woodrey finished second, with a 15-0 technical fall against Wheaton to begin the day. In the quarterfinals, Woodrey won by fall over his opponent from Elmhurst and then secured a 4-0 decision against Millikin in the semifinals. He ended as runner-up after being defeated by his nationally-ranked opponent from North Central.
Elsewhere, Jack Patting secured fourth in the 165 category, earning wins with a 22-3 technical fall in the second round of the consolation bracket and a fall over his opponent from Illinois Wesleyan. Patting moved to the third-place match after a disqualification from Carthage.
Badger, Boryla, Macias, and Woodrey all earned All-Conference honors for placing in the top three. As a team, the Vikings earned 82 total points, 12.5 ahead of fifth-place MSOE. The fourth-place standing is the highest 2020-21 for Augustana.
The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday, February 20 for a non-conference dual meet against Cornell.
