STERLING, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team kicked off their spring slate with a victory on Saturday, defeating the UW-Stevens Point Pointers by a score of 6-3.
Augie had the early advantage after taking two of the three doubles matches, beginning with the No. 1 duo of
Hannah Colbert and
Caitlyn Hanulikova. The two defeated their opponent by a score of 8-2 and was later followed up with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 by
Anna-Maria Huebel and
Natasha Gauerke. The Pointers secured the No. 3 position to make it 2-1 in favor of the Vikings heading into singles.
Augustana earned the win early in singles with three wins in a row. Colbert made quick work of her opponent at the No. 4 slot, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-0, while Huebel at No. 1 and Hanulikova at No. 2 also won in straight sets.
Maitreyi Shrikhande also coasted a victory at No. 5 to secure the other point for the Vikings, taking down her opponent by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
With the victory, Augie improves to 5-4 on the season. The team will be back in action on February 17 at Hope.
