Men finish first, women second at SAU Tune Up

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's track and field teams crossed the bridge for the SAU Tune Up meet on Saturday, where the men secured first place and the women in second.

On the men's side, Joe Gibbons found victory in the mile with a time of 4:29.29 to highlight the success for the Vikings. In the 200-meter dash, the Vikings grabbed the top four places, with Connor McBride clocking in at 23.02 to finish first. Sylvester Brady followed with a time of 23.10, with Cameron Tomko in third and Jason Smith in fourth. McBride also earned third in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.18, while Jimmy Vercoe finished fourth at 51.40. Vercoe also grabbed third place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.15. Elsewhere, Donovan Garro secured third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03.73, while AJ Banks ran a time of 8.69 in the 60-meter hurdles to finish second. 

In relays, Brady, McBride, Vercoe, and Tomko secured first in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:29.69, while Jose Gomez, Colin Stapleton, Josh Traugott, and Garro grabbed the distance relay with a time of 11:14.16. 

In field events, the Vikings had three top-five finishers in the pole vault event, with Derek Butts jumping 4.27 meters for second place. Reid McNeill followed with a height of 4.12 meters and Dakota Straight finished fifth with 3.96 meters. Caden Ellers collected a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 2.54 meters. In the weight throw, Aykeem Spivey won with a throw of 18.03 meters, with Magnus Wells following in fourth with 16.18 meters. 

As a team, the men garnered 166 total points, 20 ahead of second-place St. Ambrose.

At the Midwest Elite Invitational hosted by UW-Whitewater, Joe Langrdige finished sixth with a time of 14:37.32 in the 5000, securing a new personal record by nine seconds and collecting the second all-time placement in the indoor 5000-meter run. 

For the women, McKenzie Reser secured the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.79, with Cora Deemer in third with a time of 8.05. In the 400-meter dash, Reser grabbed second with a time of 59.78 and Jordyn Van Santen followed at 1:01.09. Additionally, Madison Morrow crossed the finish line third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.66. 

In the 4x400 relay, Van Santen, Reser, Deemer, and Shakira Wade finished second with a time of 4:10.58, while Rylee Noack, Kira Nelson, Kiana Breuer, and Ellie DeFarno snatched second in the distance medley relay with a time of 13:59.19. 

In field events, Rhiannon Marshall found victory in the high jump with a distance of 1.55 meters, with Allison Hunt following with 1.50 meters to tie in second place. Hannah Johnson finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.05 meters and a second-place finish in the triple jump with 10.18 meters, while Elizabeth Hayes secured third jumping 9.69 meters. Heather Michalski finished the night with a third-place finish in the weight throw after throwing 14.79 meters. 

As a team, the women placed second with 157 points, 44 ahead of third-place Grand View.

In Whitewater, Anna Boardman finished sixth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:11.63 at the Midwest Elite Invitational.  

The Vikings will be back in action on Friday, February 16 at the Solomon Butler Classic in Dubuque, Iowa.
