INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team split a pair of non-conference dual meets on Thursday. Augie dropped its first matchup against the Central Dutch by a score of 26-18 before a 26-18 victory against the Simpson Storm.
In the Viking's first matchup against Central, Jack Reina grabbed the first five points for Augie after pinning his opponent in the 125 weight class. Central secured the next three weight categories to snatch the advantage before Michael Macias put up three more points for the Vikings following a 6-5 decision against the Dutch's nationally-ranked wrestler in the 157 weight class. The Dutch won the 165 division and Jack Miller followed with a pin in the 174 matchup to notch six points and get the Vikings within two with a 17-15 score. Central collected nine more points after victories in the 184 and 197 weight classes. Josh Woodrey closed out the first matchup with a 4-2 tiebreaker decision, but Augie fell by a final score of 26-18.
Will Taylor lost to a nationally-ranked wrestler, while Khadyn Jacobs, Jaxson Hicks, and Jacob Badger all were defeated by regionally ranked individuals.
Against Simpson, Reina scored six for Augie via a forfeit and the Storm followed with wins in the next three weight classes to begin the contest. Macias moved the scoring back to the Vikings' favor after a 15-0 technical fall. Simpson followed with a win in the 165 matchup to take the 12-11 advantage before Miller secured an 18-0 technical fall to push it to 16-12. The Storm snatched their final win in the 184 division and Augie closed out the event with Badger adding six points via forfeit and a 10-0 major decision from Woodrey to conclude the dual meet 26-18.
With the split, Augie moves to 3-2 on the season and will return on January 4 to host the Fred Johnson Duals in the Carver Center.
