BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams each improved to 3-0 on the season on Saturday with wins over the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. The men were victorious by a score of 181-28, while the women won with a final of 165-53.
"Today was an exciting competition and I appreciate Illinois Wesleyan for all their hard work in making the meet unique by simulating the conference experience," said head coach
Dan Lloyd. "I also greatly appreciate them dedicating the meet to Bruce Walker in his memory for all that he did for our sport and I know it meant world to Brooke and Mara and the entire Walker family."
On the women's side, the team of
Hailey Glasnovich,
Livy Sholl,
Zoe Heiar, and
Caitlin Stoddard took the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.97.
Kendle Mihm,
Annabel Anderson,
Giselle Koonce, and
Mara Walker won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.06.
The Vikings claimed the top three spots of the 200-yard freestyle, led by Walker in first at 2:03.13 and
Petra Evans and Mihm coming in second and third. The team also grabbed the top four spots in the 50 freestyle, with Anderson in first with a time of 25.81. Four of the top five spots in the 200-yard IM were filled by Augustana as
Annabella Valenti clocked a time of 2:21.0 to finish first. She finished .02 ahead of Illinois Wesleyan in second. Heiar earned first in the 100 fly at 1:02.15 to continue the success for Augie, while Mihm was the winner in the 100 free with a time of 55.41. Four Vikings finished in the top five in the 100 free event. In the 100 back, Glasnovich claimed first with a mark of 1:01.09, nearly two seconds faster than the second place finisher. M. Walker and
Bella Casanovas grabbed the top two spots in the 500-yard freestyle, while
Ava Kauffeld led a group of three Vikings in the top three in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:11.63.
Kate Kucera was the champion in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 196.95.
For the men, the Vikings grabbed both relays.
Dante Rinaldi,
Matthew Meyer,
Hunter Craft, and
Bjorn Sievert won the 200 medley with a time of 1:53.97, while
Gavin McCorry,
Kacper Cebula, Sievert, and
Lucas Rettig notched a victory in the 200 free in 1:27.08.
Augustana also won all of the individual races, including a victory
Carter Lavold in the 1000 free and McCorry in the 50. McCorry was also the champion in the 100 freestyle after finishing in 48.04, and Lavold took the 500 free with a mark of 5:02.27. Cebula won the 200 freestyle by over five seconds, while
Nathan Mesina led a group of four Vikings in the top five in the 200 IM with a first-place time of 2:01.42. Cebula also won the 100-yard fly with a time of 52.78. In the 100-yard backstroke, Augie claimed the top four spots, led by Rettig's winning time of 54.77. The Vikings also went one through four in the 100 breaststroke as
Michael Garland notched first at 1:01.51.
"Today was a great day for the sport of swimming and the swimming community as a whole," added Lloyd. "Our team had a lot of fun racing fast and doing it as a family meant the world to our program. Today was a great example of what college swimming is all about and how the swimming community is truly a family that stands beside one another."
The Vikings will be back at home for Senior Day on November 23 against Grinnell.
