ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team was defeated in its final CCIW regular season match of the season on Wednesday, falling to the Carthage Firebirds in straight sets.
Carthage jumped out to a 6-1 lead to begin the contest before pushing its lead out to 12 at a score of 15-3. The differential continued to grow as the Firebirds ran away with a 25-9 opening-set victory. Five different Vikings notched a kill in game one.
It was a tighter start to the second set, with Carthage winning the race to 10 points while holding a three-point advantage. From there, the visitors used an 8-3 scoring run to notch their largest lead of the game at the time. A block by
Kylie Collachia and an error by the Firebirds inched the Vikings closer, but six of the final seven points scored went in favor of Carthage to earn the 12-point victory. The Firebirds broke away from a 9-9 tie in the third with a 16-4 scoring outburst to close out the match.
Alita Folkening and
Lanah Queckboerner each had three kills for Augie, while
Ashley Awbrey posted double-digit digs with 10.
Carmela Carbone added two solo blocks.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 10-18 overall and 2-6 in the CCIW. With Carroll's loss to North Park on Wednesday, the Vikings clinched a spot in the CCIW Tournament for the third consecutive season. The team will close out the regular season at home on Friday vs. Nebraska Wesleyan before taking on Carthage in the CCIW Tournament quarterfinals next Tuesday.
