Men's water polo advances to MPSF East title game

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team will look to snag its third straight MPSF East title on Sunday following a 16-8 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday in the semifinals.

Augustana had a big opening half after scoring six times in the first and seven in the second. Oskar Bannister was the first on the board for Augie two minutes in, followed by a tally from Mark Addison 30 seconds later to make it 2-0 game. Following a score from the Presidents, Addison and Stevan Rasic went back-to-back to move the margin out to three. A pair of strikes by Ian Palmroos and Rasic in the final 40 second brought the advantage out to 6-2 after eight minutes to play.

In the second, the Vikings saw the first two goals of the frame as Jake Fisher and Alden Brinmeier each found the back of the net for the first time. Brinkmeier added his second of the game less than a minute later before Addison began a string of four straight for Augustana to close the half. Rhys Lomax scored twice in the final two minutes to help lead the Vikings to a 13-4 lead at the halftime break.

The Augie defense stole the show in the third quarter, not allowing a goal in the frame. Colin McDowell, Addison, and Rasic each scored int he period to extend the differential out to 12 at a score of 16-4. The Presidents out-scored the Vikings 4-0 in the fourth to complete the 16-8 final.

Rasic and Addison each led the way with four goals apiece, while Ian Root and Henry Sothern combined for nine saves in their split time in net.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 14-6 on the year and will take on Penn State Behrend in the title game tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT.
