KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team will take on the Carthage Firebirds on Tuesday, November 12 in the first round of the CCIW Tournament.
Augustana clinched the No. 6 seed in the postseason following a 2-6 record in CCIW action this season. The Vikings finished 10-19 overall and are coming off a 3-1 home loss to Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday to wrap up the regular season. Nebraska Wesleyan came out on top following a close opening set, winning by a score of 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. After a back-and-forth start that saw several lead changes, the Prairie Wolves used a 4-1 scoring run halfway through the frame to claim their largest lead of five at 17-12. Augie answered with six straight points to move out in front, using three kills from three different players to make it an 18-17 advantage. A 4-0 spurt for the visitors gave them the momentum back before hanging on for the two-point win. Nebraska Wesleyan secured set two by a score of 25-16 to bring its match lead to 2-0.
Augie got on the board with a 25-21 come-from-behind victory in the third. After leading for most of the set, the Vikings lost a 17-13 advantage following seven straight scores from the Prairie Wolves. A kill from
Carmela Carbone and an attack error by the visitors made it a 20-19 score, but Nebraska Wesleyan got one back to stay in front 21-19. Augustana notched the next six rally wins to claim the 25-21 decision. Carbone added a kill and a block during the 6-0 run. The Prairie Wolves clinched the match with a bounce-back 25-18 victory in the fourth.
Emily Schipper led Augustana with 12 kills, followed by
Alexis Richards with eight.
Ashley Awbrey collected 17 digs.
Carthage earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament following a 6-2 mark in league play. The Firebirds are winners of their last two matches, including a five-set victory on Saturday at Aurora. The Spartans took the opening set, but were met with back-to-back wins from the Firebirds. A three-point win for Aurora forced a fifth and final frame, which went to Carthage by a score of 15-7. Four different Firebirds had at least 14 kills apiece in the win. This season, Carthage is 4-3 on its home court and has won two of the last three games at home. The Firebirds' last matchup in Kenosha came back on November 1, a 3-0 sweep over UW-La Crosse.
Augustana is 16-40 all-time vs. Carthage, with the Firebirds winning their meeting in Rock Island last Wednesday in straight sets. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
