Box Score 2 SHERMAN, Texas -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team officially wrapped up the top seed in the MPSF East standings on Sunday, defeating the Penn State Behrend Lions 18-8 before knocking off the Austin 'Roos 14-9. The Vikings finish the regular season with an 8-0 record in MPSF East action and will be the top seed in the eastern division in the upcoming MPSF Tournament.
In game one against the Lions, Augie doubled up its opponent following eight minutes of action to bring a 6-3 lead into the second quarter.
Rhys Lomax scored three times in the opening frame, while
Stevan Rasic also added two to help lead the team to the early advantage. Scoring slowed down in the second, but the Vikings still added on to their margin after out-scoring Penn State Behrend 3-1 in the period. Rasic earned his third goal of the game early on and
Mason Landes notched the final two tallies of the half to make it a 9-4 lead for Augustana at the halftime break.
Another three-goal differential ensued in the third, with the Vikings scoring four times to the Lions' one. Rasic and Lomax added on to their scoring total in the frame before
Trentin Lechleitner and
Colin McDowell secured their first goal of the game. Augie posted another plus-margin in the fourth with a five-spot to complete the double-digit win at a score of 18-8.
Rasic and Lomax each ended with five goals to lead the Vikings.
Ian Root earned the win in net after stopping 15 shots.
In game two vs. Austin, the Vikings used a big opening quarter to claim a 5-1 lead after eight minutes of play.
Tyler Leslie and
Oskar Bannister collected the first two strikes of the game, but the team was met by a score from Austin to cut the differential in half. Bannister, McDowell, and
Ian Palmroos added on to the Augie lead with the final three goals of the quarter. Augustana out-scored Austin 3-1 in the second period to being an 8-2 lead into halftime.Â
The 'Roos inched closer with a 4-3 margin in the third and got within thee at one point before goals by
Declan Hutton and Rasic moved the score to 11-6 entering the fourth. Each team scored three times in the final frame to keep the five-point differential intact.
McDowell and Rasic each had three goals to lead the Vikings. Hutton saved 13 shots in net.
Augie will await its matchup in the upcoming MPSF Tournament set to take place in Los Angeles, Calif. beginning November 22.
