MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming & diving teams each improved to 2-0 on the season Friday night, with the men earning a 135-47 over the Monmouth Fighting Scots and the women coming out on top with a final of 148-35.
"It was a good night of racing to start the weekend," said head coach
Dan Lloyd. "This will be a great first test of our conference schedule simulation with a full invitational tomorrow in Bloomington coming off tonight. I know our team is excited to get up and fight tomorrow."
On the men's side, the Vikings took three of the top four spots in the 200-yard medley relay and were led by the winning team of
Dante Rinaldi,
Evan Lopez,
Carter Lavold, and
Bjorn Sievert in 1:34.95.
Gavin McCorry claimed first in the 200-yard free style with a time of 1:46.13 to lead a group of three Vikings in the top three in the event. McCorry also was triumphant in the 100-yard backstroke, with Rinaldi and
Cesar Castillo finishing behind in second and third. Augie also secured first through fourth in the 200-yard IM, led by
Kacper Cebula's winning time of 1:58.65. Cebula also won the 100-yard freestyle as the only swimmer with a sub-50 second time.
Ethan Herstedt was the champion of the 500-yard freestyle by nearly nine seconds with a time of 5:16.87, while Lopez finished in 1:01.53 in the 100-yard breaststroke to wrap up first. Three Vikings followed to round out an all-Augustana top four in the race.
As a team, the men was seven of 10 events.
For the women, the Vikings won the 200-yard medley relay as
Hailey Glasnovich,
Livy Sholl,
Zoe Heiar, and
Annabel Anderson took first with a time of 1:53.61. Augie also claimed the 200-yard freestyle relay, led by
Giselle Koonce,
Caitlin Stoddard,
Mara Walker, and
Kendle Mihm in first with a mark of 1:44.10.
Koonce led a group of three Vikings in the top three in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a winning time of 2:01.75. She also secured first in the 500-yard freestyle after finishing in 5:29.18. Four Augie swimmers appeared in the top five in the 50-yard free, with Mihm in first at 25.60 and Stoddard in second at 26.13. Mihm also won the 100-yard freestyle to give her three total victories for a second straight meet. Walker had the fastest time by nearly six seconds in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:16.17, while Heiar beat out a pair of teammates in the 100-yard fly after clocking 1:04.43. In the 100-yard backstroke, Glasnovich beat out her opponent from Monmouth by .21 to take first.
Ava Kauffeld was the winner of the 100-yard breaststroke over Monmouth by just .04.
The Augie women won all 10 races.
Augustana will beback in action tomorrow at the IWU Halloween Invite in Bloomington, Ill.
