ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team will resume CCIW action on Wednesday, October 23 when they welcome the first-place Illinois Wesleyan Titans to the Carver Center.
Augustana enters with an 8-15 overall record and 1-3 mark in the CCIW, recently completing a 3-0 sweep over Webster at home last Thursday. Needing nine kills to tie and 10 to break the all-time program record for kills,
Emily Schipper was active early, notching six in the opening frame as the Vikings took the opener by a score of 25-15. Augie scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back after building a lead out to as many as 10 before ending the set with that final margin. Webster got within five at 13-8, but two kills from
Alexis Richards and one by Schipper helped launch another scoring run to pull away.
In the second, Schipper collected three of the team's first four kills to pull her even with the record before setting the all-time number later in the set. With the score reading 15-12, her 10th kill of the match put her at 1,487 kills for her career, breaking a 20-year record of 1,486 set by Callyn Dittmar from 2000-03. After notching the all-time mark, another kill from Schipper brought Augustana within two at 15-13 in the set, but a 3-0 run from the Gorloks stretched their advantage to the largest of the frame at 18-13. From there, the Vikings rattled off seven points in a row to take a 20-18 lead, highlighted by two kills from
Carli Udovich and a service ace by Schipper during that span. Augie's run continued, securing five of the final six to make it a 12-1 scoring outburst in total to close the game and take a 2-0 lead into the third. The team's momentum spilled over into the next set as the Vikings coasted to a 25-14 win to complete the sweep.Schipper hit .412 on the night, with her 17 kills leading all players in the contest.
Kylie Collachia averaged nearly nine assists per set and finished with 26 total, while
Carmela Carbone had five of the team's 10 service aces.
Illinois Wesleyan currently sits with a 15-6 overall mark and 6-0 record in conference. The team is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division III poll. The Titans recently had their eight-match winning streak come to an end at home last Friday, falling to UW-Stevens Point by a score of 3-1. Prior to the loss, the Titans had not suffered a defeat since September 21, picking up wins over two ranked teams during that span. Illinois Wesleyan spots a 4-2 record on the road this season, with their last resulting in a five-set victory over North Central on October 16.
The Titans lead the all-time series 48-26-1 and won both meetings last season in Bloomington.
