Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team began MPSF East play on Saturday with a pair of wins, defeating the Austin 'Roos 13-6 before knocking off the Washington & Jefferson Presidents by a score of 24-6.
Against Austin, the Vikings used a big opening quarter to pull ahead, out-scoring the 'Roos 4-1 in the frame. Augie added onto its lead after holding a slight 2-1 advantage in the second to bring a 6-2 lead into halftime. Another positive margin for the Vikings in the third extended the differential by one before a high-scoring fourth quarter closed out the game with its 13-6 final.
Stevan Rasic and
Oskar Bannister each scored three times for Augie in the win, with two of Bannister's tallies coming via penalty shot. He and
Tyler Leslie also added two assists.
Declan Hutton earned the win in net after stopping 18 shots.
In game two vs. the Presidents, Augie scored six goals in each of the first two periods while also holding W&J to just two in each frame. After leading by eight at the halftime break, the defense stole the show in the second half, allowing just two goals total and zero in the fourth quarter. Augie's five-spot in the third and seven-goal fourth quarter brought the game to its 24-6 final, the largest margin of victory for the Vikings this season.Â
A total of 12 players scored in the win for Augustana, led by six from Rasic. Six others notched multi-goal efforts, while Bannister posted a game-high five assists.
Ian Root made 11 saves in net.
With the wins, Augie improves to 6-5 on the year and 2-0 in conference. The team will be back in action tomorrow vs. Penn State Behrend and Wheaton.
