Women’s wrestling secures third place at Fred Johnson Duals

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's wrestling team hosted the Fred Johnson Duals on Sunday, securing a third-place finish after posting a 2-1 record.

The Vikings started the day with a battle against the Morton Panthers, which concluded in a 35-4 victory for Augie. The Panthers only grabbed the 116 weight division in the dual, while Augustana captured the following seven matchups. Sandi Pfeil was the first to earn success for Augie as she pinned her opponent in the 123 weight class, while Monica Griffin also found victory via pin against Morton in the 130 category. Kara Rohlf came out on top in the 136 division, defeating her opponent by a fall to increase the score to 15-4. The next three face-offs from Aine Moffit in 143, Jaiden Moody in 155, and Sawyer Graham in 170 finished due to forfeits from Morton. Angie Guy wrapped up the dual against the Panthers with a fall to execute a 35-4 final score. 

Augustana's next battle was against the Division ll Quincy Hawks, where the Vikings fell 25-16. The Vikings won four of nine attempts, while Quincy won five. The Hawks conquered the first two matchups, one outcome being a forfeit. Augustana followed with two victories of their own coming from Pfeil in the 123 weight class, who won by a 10-6 decision to grab three points for Augie. Griffin secured the 130 category by a 15-0 technical fall to add four more points to Augustana's team score. Both teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the showdown, with Quincy grabbing the 136 division and Moffit finding victory in the 143 due to a technical fall. The Hawks won the 155 weight division before Graham secured a victory in the 170 category. Quincy notched the final match to seal the team victory.

The Vikings' last showdown of the day was the third-place round, where Augie grabbed a 28-15 victory against the Jamestown Jimmies. The Jimmies grabbed the 109 class by forfeit and 116 weight division, while Augie followed with four straight wins. Pfeil and Griffin each claimed forfeit wins to even the score before Rohlf won by a technical fall in the 136 class and Moffit won by forfeit in the 143 weight class. Jamestown put a halt to Augie's successful run as they took the 155-weight division. Graham turned the scoring back into Augie's favor as she earned a technical fall in the 170 division and Guy closed out the day with a pin in the 191 category.

With the results, the Vikings now sit at 4-6 on the season. Women's wrestling will be back in the Tim Dodge Mezzanine on Saturday, January 13 for a conference battle against the No. 11 Aurora Spartans.
